  • Spacious family-friendly tents-only site in the Derbyshire countryside
  • Chatsworth Estate, Bakewell and Peak District within a half-hour drive
  • Firewood available on site; shops and pubs within walking distance
It’s all about open air and a handy location at this Derbyshire site, a tents-only spot in gorgeous countryside… Yew Tree Farm is well placed for peaceful stays, within walking distance of pubs, small supermarkets and takeaways, and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Alfreton. The family-friendly site is well set-up for fuss-free stays: it’s on a sizeable field and only a small number of guests are allowed at any one time, so there’s no need to worry about fighting the neighbours for that extra scrap of grass, plus with simple facilities limited to a covered washing-up area and a toilet block with solar-heated showers, there’s nothing too complex to navigate round here (thought it’s a good idea to bring a torch along, as the unlit site can be tricky after dark). That open space lends itself well to fresh-air frolics, with loads of room for kids and dogs to run about and for supervising grownups to light up barbecues and campfires – no need to forage too far for firewood either, as there are packs for sale on site (please note that the site isn't always manned though, so if you know you'll want a bag of wood please order one in advance). If all that gadding about isn’t enough activity for kids (or grownups), Peak District National Park is within 15 minutes’ drive – make immediate tracks for walks and hikes, bike rides, climbs and even days of leisure zooming about in a 1929 Ford Model A Phaeton.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: As close to wild camping as you get without wild camping. Very quiet site and I was cycle touring. Around 90% off Road to get there. Excellent communication from the owner.I enjoyed it. Thank you.

Disliked: Like every where waterlogged in areas, however I was pre warned so I expected it.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Excellent location and despite the previous weather found a great pitch. Stunning views to wake up to and a simple no frills setup. Friendly owner, and a relaxed atmosphere. This is a no frills site, which is pretty much a wild camp, just with toilet and shower facilities, which are clean and tidy. Really enjoyed our stay and will be going back. Highly recommend 👍🏾

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Loved being able to turn up and leave at any time (may be season dependent). Lovely large field to choose a spot, and very cheap for the area and facilities. Friendly helpful owners, recommending local walks and local pubs. Two women's toilets and one shower which was piping hot. Washing up area with hot water. Able to have a fire pit, bring your own wood or buy on site. Bring wellies as it was very muddy/boggy on the field (this can't be a 'dislike' as I bet there isn't a dry field in Britain at the moment!!)

Disliked: Nothing. I'll be back

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Loved our stay! Brought my two young kids (7 and 4) back here having been a few years ago with my eldest. Love the back to basics camping, which in my opinion is exactly how camping should be. Really nice new toilet/wash block right by the field. Kids loved it, nice warm campfire and marshmallows! We'll definitely be back again 😃

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Spacious field and even at its furthest point, not too much of a walk to the facilities, which were clean and functional. Loved the fact we could pitch anywhere and not have the car next to our tent which gave a bit of a wild camp vibe that we were hoping for especially when our campfire got going. Aside from the distance sound of traffic, very quiet. There were seven other tents in the field during our stay, everyone respectfully quiet, enjoying their own campfires. Would definitely recommend Yew Tree Farm to anyone who wants a basic camp not too far away from civilisation but far enough to feel away from everything!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Arrived yesterday and stayed for one night only as I wanted a night away by myself to recharge the human batteries. As a lone person some places can be quiet daunting but not at Yew Tree Farm!! It had a friendly, private, relaxing feel to it and was brilliant for just taking some time out. I found it easily using google maps and parked up with no issues. Once I was getting my bags out of the car I was greeted by a friendly lady (I didn’t catch the name unfortunately) who checked my booking and then pointed me in the direction of the field and the facilities. The field is directly next door to where you park so it’s not an issue one bit that you can’t park on the field itself, if anything it makes it better as you’re not having car engines humming away while you’re relaxing! I decided to pitch up in the furthest corner plot and it only took 45 seconds to walk there from the car, which isn’t unreasonable at all. The field itself is very spacious and well kept. The grass is slightly longer than lawnmower length but this is great as it gives a wildcamp feel and creates a natural cushion on the floor of the tent which was quite nice. There was 3/4 other tents in the field so privacy wasn’t an issue, but even if there was 10 tents I still think it wouldn’t be due to the size of the field. The facilities on site (toilets, shower & washing up sinks) were well lit in the dark, and kept clean. So that’s a tick there. I saw others with fires and fire pits which I believe you can hire, I myself did not have one but if I was to come again I would. This is a nice touch as not every campsite allows this, so if you want a fire you’re more than welcome to hear!! I can’t think of anything else to say other than I would come back and stay again, I found no problems and nothing to complain about at all. 10/10 :)

Local attractions

This is the very edge of Austen country: the Peak District National Park was a major inspiration for Pride and Prejudice, so take a deep dive into that classic era of British history with stops at stunning Chatsworth (used as Darcy’s house in the 2005 movie), Tissington, Hardwick, Sudbury and Haddon. All are within 40 minutes’ drive and highly recommended for a dose of grandeur. Keep one toe in the past within 15 minutes of the site by slowing everything down for steam engine travels on Midland Railway, or choo-chooing along to Crich Tramway Village for a ride on a vintage tram. Prefer to escape days of yore? Get out in the fresh air at Carsington Water half an hour away for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing and powerboating or to chance beginner’s luck with a rod and reel. If that’s not something that gets the family trotting happily along, opt for Northfield Farm instead, where everyone can clamber into saddles for horse riding and pony treks. Nearby Matlock (15 minutes) is a must visit, particularly with kids in tow… take the cable car to the Heights of Abraham, spend a day at Gulliver’s Kingdom and swim over to the aquarium. If that’s all too sedate, head an hour away to the hair-raising rides of Alton Towers.
