The area itself was lovely, the facilities were clean and reception was very helpful.

    Disliked:

The field was too cramped and it was a free for all as to where you could put your tent up and then you were blocked in because it was that busy and unorganised.

From the manager...

Hello Tracey. We're pleased to read that you enjoyed the peace and quiet at Lakeside and happy to see you would return. Regarding the other points you've made; if you return and find that you are on a pitch you don't like please pop in to reception and they will do their best to move you and answer any questions you have. There were some tree-less pitches availalbe at the time of your stay. Our receptionists normally explain that you cannot walk all the way around the lake as part of the walk is within the grounds of Castle Howard which you need a ticket to enter, but they can tell you about the best paths, including circular routes, in the area to go walking on. We have maps and leaflets available for our visitors in reception. Last year a path was constructed to keep our guests away from traffic whilst walking up to Castle Howard itself. In the courtyard at Castle Howard there are various outlets that visitors and passers-by can use, parking is free; the courtyard is just over a mile and takes around 30 minutes to walk. We hope you will return one day to experience some of the beautiful wider countryside walks on the estate.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review Susan. It is reassuring to hear that you felt safe in your surroundings. We're also pleased that you found the site to your liking. Hopefully on your early morning walk to the facilities you were blessed with a cloudless, moonlit sky. As a dark skies area, with good weather, the stars can 'pop' ! We would however still recommend a torch to light the ground to ensure you didn't stumble over a tripping hazard. Do come back.

Excellent size pitch... Plenty of fresh grass and very pleasant to create a small private area for sitting out and dining.

    Disliked:

Whilst the pitch was an excellent size.. It backed onto the main camping field.. Initially this was of no consequence.. However.. When a set of new neighbours moved in privacy and peace went out of the window as there is only a rung fence separating the pitches.. This sadly is more about poor manners and disinterest in others rather than the camp site! However, backing directly onto other pitches when there is an almost endless flow of poor/unacceptable language and behaviour at equally unacceptable volume does rather sour a otherwise lovely stay.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Lakeside. We're sorry to hear that other people, with no consideration for others and bad language, soured your stay. Thank you for understanding this wasn't our fault; sadly we can't 'vet' our guests in advance and have to trust that our campers will follow our code of conduct and be respectful. We cannot know how guests will speak; for many bad language is a habit picked up from the people they associate with and they don't understand how irritating and offensive it can be.

Unfortunatley the electric grass pitches all need to be close to the supply which means their position is fixed but, had we been notified, we could either have tried to move you away or had a gentle word with the offending group to ask them to appreciate that we are a family site where bad language is not acceptable. We always try and help rectify any problems so please do always let us know. We hope you will visit again.

Clean, quiet, bright, lovely little shop on site, Great larger shop at Castle Howard.

    Disliked:

Wi-Fi is nonexistent, and phone signal is nearly nonexistent.

From the manager...

Thanks for taking the time to leave us your review Martin. It's pleasing to know that you liked our location, the site and our facilities. You are correct in that being in a dip of the beautiful Howardian Hills can make reception from some providers tricky, a fact disliked by some guests but approved of by those who love the chance to be 'off-grid' and away from it all for a while. Our FAQ's, which can be read before booking, do state that there is no Wi-fi. We hope however that you were able to make use of the free wi-fi which is available at Castle Howard.
