  • Peaceful, leafy and serene spot just outside Nantahala National Forest
  • Within easy reach of kayaking, tubing, ziplining, fishing and hiking
  • Outdoor pool, pavilion, shop and lots of grassy space to relax among
Hole up here among a park filled with hummingbirds, hawks, dragonflies and butterflies, with the Smoky Mountains as a scenic backdrop… This rural and green park is set just outside the Nantahala National Forest and within easy driving distance of several trout fishing spots as well as Cherokee and Bryson City a short drive away. Also within easy driving distance of Fort Wilderness RV Park and Campground are the famed and acclaimed theme park rides, shows and waterpark of Dollywood, as well as other outdoorsy spots for active days filled with boat and kayak tours, ziplining, whitewater rafting and tubing, around places like the Nantahala Outdoor Center, Deep Creek and Fontana Lake. The park covers 10 acres of pristinely maintained space to relax around, with grassy and shaded accommodation areas aplenty. It's run by seasoned campers Andre and Cindy, who take pride in knowing exactly what their guests are after: peace, quiet, a friendly vibe, campfires to sit around, and a lush and leafy locale. The park’s big pool is most certainly the place to be in (or next to) on hot days, attracting a handful of friendly locals as well as park guests. For times when a spot of different recreation is in order, head to the games room for board games and pool, or host an event at the park’s pavilion. It’s easy to get out to the local settlements for supplies whenever you need them, but should you wish to remain on base for essential fodder and camping supplies, the park shop sells basic groceries and snacks as well as camping stuff like firewood and kit for RVs and swimming.

Local attractions

As Fort Wilderness RV Park and Campground is set between two national parks – the Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway – nature-filled days are plentiful around here: have an amble about the hiking trails that crisscross the locale, fish for trout in the Cherokee river, and explore the region to find cascades like Mingo Falls, one of the tallest of its kind in the Southern Appalachians. Outdoorsy sorts seeking adrenalised action are well sorted around several local adventure spots too: Nantahala Outdoor Center for whitewater rafting, horse riding and zooming down ziplines; Deep Creek for tubing, picnicking and swimming around icy-cold waters; and Fontana Lake for water-based explores in a kayak or a boat. While you’re in this part of the world, you surely must get out to Dollywood, around an hour’s drive north, with 40 rides, 15 park shows, and waterpark slides.
