  • Peaceful wild camping on the equatorial island paradise of Príncipe
  • A 10-minute walk to Santo António; 10 minutes’ drive to airport
  • Spectacular white-sand beaches within 25 minutes’ drive
White-sand beaches, jungle hikes and peaceful back-to-basics stays… If that’s the sort of thing you seek, search no more – just make your way to MIP Wild Camping, a family-friendly site less than a kilometre from Santo António, the main settlement on the island of Príncipe. This is wild camping in its truest form. There are no showers or toilets on the site, so guests will have to make their own arrangements for those. There’s no parking either, so those arriving by car will have to park in Santo António, which is a 10-minute stroll away. Food falls under guests’ control too, with barbecues welcome and a particularly viewsome patio to eat on. The site is a prime location to use as a jumping-off point for explores of this scenic equatorial island off the coast of West Africa. A long-extinct volcano and a former hotspot for Portuguese plantations, Príncipe is now largely overrun with jungle and lush vegetation, making it a wildlife haven and a top destination for ecotourism. On arrival, immediate outings should be made to the spectacular white-sand beaches that line the coast. The must-visits are largely in the north and northeast of the island, with Praia BomBom (15 minutes’ drive) and Banana Beach (25 minutes) particularly worthy picks.

Local attractions

Príncipe is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, so it should come as no surprise that animals, ecology and outdoor adventures are very much to the fore here. Start explores focused on the former with a trip to Kaxi Tetuga museum, a little over 20 minutes’ drive away, to learn about turtles and other sea life, plus marine endangerment. From that place of serious thinking, venture up to the white-sand beaches along the north and northeast coasts, where Olive Ridley, green, hawksbill and leatherback turtles drag themselves ashore to build nests and lay eggs. Well-timed stays might even coincide with hatching season, so prepare to see flocks of baby turtles moving seaward. Those northern beaches – Banana Beach in particular, 25 minutes from base – are also a top spot from which to engage in some whale watching, with humpbacks frequently appearing offshore. Guests can get closer too by chartering a boat trip. What’s happening below the waves is as worthy of attention as what’s on top of them, and snorkelling or diving (tours are available) may mean encounters with parrot fish, barracuda, nurse sharks, turtles and volcanic borders covered in colourful coral. Prefer to stay in the dry? Explore the old plantations – including Roça Sundy, the one-time biggest coffee plantation on the island – or opt for jungle hikes to waterfalls, mountain tops and secluded beaches. Climbs to the highest peak, Pico Papagaio, start 15 minutes away.
