Camp under the trees

General

  • Opposite the beach in a small fishing village 8km from Porto
  • Within easy reach of Mindelo and the vineyards of the Douro Valley
  • Pool, paddling pool, shop and restaurant

Everyone off to Porto: Portugal's second biggest city is a place of world-famed wines, gorgeous port (of course), the bars and restaurants of the Ribeira area, and old old sites like the Palácio da Bolsa.

To stay within simple reach of Porto and say Pah to big city prices, have a break at Parque Orbitur Angeiras, eight kilometres north of town. It's a peaceful and green Porto spot, surrounded by trees and bushes and opposite the beach in the fishing village of Angeiras. A bus stop is close to the site.

Spectacular Portuguese sands, the dunes of Mindelo and the vineyards of the Douro Valley are all easy to get to from here; on site, there's a pool and a paddling pool, a tennis court, a multisports pitch, a playground and a TV room. A mini market is also to hand, but you'll probably prefer to have bites to eat at the restaurant, popular with Angeiras locals.

Amenities include washrooms with showers, toilets and disabled facilities. The site has free wifi.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 04/15 and 10/13 (subject to weather conditions).

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

A very good family campsite09/12/2019

There’s lots to like about this campsite. It’s a short walk to the beach and seaside restaurants. It has an amazing swimming pool. The ablutions and showers are good and kept clean. Pitches are spacious and there’s lots of shade. The on site supermarket is well equipped and the restaurant serves good food. What more could you want?

    Disliked:

Some long grass on certain pitches are it feel unkempt. Power points could be upgraded but that’s being fussy.

The office staff and general staff were pleasant and welcoming. The adjoining swimming pool was excellent, and the restaurant alongside also excellent.

I did like the camp generally, nice to walk around in with lots of shade.

Certainly the hut we stayed in was clean and neat.

Good bus service with bus stop right at the front gate - great for getting into the villages en route to Porto.

    Disliked:

Referring to the restaurant opening times, if the notice at the gate to the restaurant area says it opens at 8am, then it should open at 8 am and not 9am. An early morning coffee would have been great.

The grass/lawn in parts of the camp was knee high and needed to be cut. It gave some campsites a general impression of being neglected.

So many toilets were without seats, or some had seats but were loose.

A little more attention to detail would take it up to 4 stars - even 5 stars.

From the manager...

Friendly staff - especially Luciano at Reception.
    Lovely pool
Established camping area with lots of trees for shade.
Cabin was big enough for two people.

    Disliked:

Only one of the ablutions (bathrooms) was mildly acceptable.
The other two were very bad!
Broken toilets - no seats . . . very distressing for older people to have to squat.
Areas between the cabins/pods were filthy - badly in need of maintenance - Lots of weeds.
Our cabin did not contain sufficient apparatus - the umbrella was missing as well as the clothing drying rack. We had to ask more than 4 times for the drying rack before they supplied it and my husband had to go and collect it himself.
Strange bedding - 1 closed sheet (like a huge pillow case)
4 small pillows with uncomfortable pillow cases
VERY warm and rough (to the skin) blankets.

We found that the price we paid for this was too high for what we got! Sorry! Just being honest.

Local attractions

Several beaches are close by, including Angeiras beach opposite the site, Labruge beach two kilometres north and São Paio beach within three and a half kilometres in the same direction. The dunes of Mindelo are also worth their eight-kilometre trip for a flit around their ornithological reserve.

Take the bus from outside the site to reach Porto in about an hour, to mooch around its many attractions including the Palácio da Bolsa, the Fundação de Serralves and the historic Ribeira area, with its many bars dishing up local cuisine.

The city's most famed of course for its port wine (the clue is in the name), so wander around the plentiful port cellars too, to see how it's all made and to sample the many different and mighty tasty varieties.

If you now have a thirst for learning more about Portugal's wine, take a day trip to the Douro Valley to visit the vineyards there surrounded by their spectacular scenery.

Other destinations for day trips include the lively city of Braga and its 12th-century cathedral, and Guimarães, to take a cable car ride over the historic streets. Both cities are around 50 kilometres away.
