  • Comfortable accommodation in a quiet sheltered country area
  • Five minutes from Lake Ferry and 30 mins to Cape Palliser
  • Only 25 minutes from the famed Martinborough wine capital
There are gateways aplenty from this North Island site in the Wellington region. First up, Gateway Motel Holiday Park's Pirinoa setting is a nicely nifty gateway to Cape Palliser, the spectacularly scenic Cook Strait coast spot with the biggest seal colony on the North Island. Rambles galore are here, along with stunning scenery and the highly viewsome landscapes of the Cape Palliser lighthouse – see if you can stagger up all 250 steps (spoiler alert: it's very much worth it). Cape Palliser is to the south west from here; to the north, your gateway setting is a gateway to Martinborough (25 minutes' drive), the  South Wairarapa town famed for its vineyards (the pinot noir is the one to bag, and if you're around in November you must pop along to the Martinborough wine festival). Also around – about 20 minutes' drive west – is Lake Wairarapa, surrounded by wetlands in the Wairarapa Moana Wetlands Park, and it's only five minutes' drive from Gateway to Lake Ferry and its beach and fishing for whitebait. Further afield and for shopping and sightseeing, Wellington is reachable in under 90 minutes' drive. Leisurely days on site can be sorted in and around the outdoor pool while the kids let loose at the play area and trampoline or by placidly surfing around the ground using the free wifi. Gateway Motel Holiday Park is a small and friendly park, welcoming families, motorbikers and student groups.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: A super cute little campground with a handful of sites and a few cabins. The facilities are dated but they're kept very clean and the kitchen is well stocked with Cutlery and plates and cookware. We visited in winter so didn't try the pool. The host was friendly and after giving us a run down she left us to enjoy the place. It's an easy drive out to Palliser and Ngawi for seals and the lighthouse, or down the road to Lake Ferry for epic food and the freshest seafood at the local pub. We had our dog with us in the camper and that was all good to keep her on the lead. There's an old school trampoline for kids, and the pool in summer. Rural location and quiet at night except for the very occasional car.

Disliked: It is cold in winter so come prepared for that! The front gate is near the road and doesn't have a locked gate for small kids. The initial contact with the hosts was tricky but once on site they were lovely.

Local attractions

Your first stop should be Lake Ferry, five minutes from Gateway and on the shores of Lake Onoke and Palliser Bay. The sunsets around here are spectacular and the lake is also known for its fishing, its peaceful and scenic setting, and its waterside walks. The Putangirua Pinnacles (10 minutes away) are a top spot for pics and strolls around the weird rock pillars. At Cape Palliser and Palliser Bay (half an hour's drive), climb to the top of the historic Palliser lighthouse for more viewsome scenes, followed by a ramble around the coastline – with camera in hand to snap shots of the seals. Just before the lighthouse is the old fishing village of Ngawi, where you can go spearfishing, hit the surf or land New Zealand's famed paua with their iridescent shells. If you're having a day trip to island capital Wellington, take the five-minute trip on the Wellington Cable Car funicular railway between Lambton Quay and Kelburn for views over the city, and have lazy days wandering around Wellington Museum, the Wellington City Art Gallery and the National Library of New Zealand. Te Papa, New Zealand's national museum, is a top place in the city to pick up affordable necklaces and other jewellery made from paua shells.
