  • Family-friendly site in a green area 15 kilometres from Budapest
  • A 10-minute drive to Törökbálint fishing lake and 30 to Lake Velence
  • Outdoor swimming pool, bar, restaurant and wifi; bus stop close by
For a base near the buzz of Budapest, bring yourself to Fortuna Camping, in a green area less than 15 kilometres away from Hungary’s capital. A bus stop is just outside the park for transport that will whisk you towards the city’s ornate thermal baths, age-old architecture and cool cultural scene with a journey of half an hour or so. Zip in and out of the centre – whether travelling under your own steam or on the weekly group trips that head in from Fortuna Camping – between forest hikes in the tree-covered area next to the park and swims in the on-site pool. A slide’s been set up for the kids to splash down, and the grownups haven’t been overlooked either: a poolside bar is on hand for chilled-out drinks. For aquatic activities outside the park, a small fishing lake is at Törökbálint, less than 10 minutes' drive away, and a bigger body of water – Lake Velence – is half an hour away. The main M1, M7 and M0 motorways are easy to access for speedy ins and outs too. No plans to veer far from the outdoor pool? The park has a restaurant for meals, but if you do feel up to venturing a bit further, it’s less than a 20-minute walk to the eateries in the town of Törökbálint. Amenities at Fortuna Camping also include a toilet block and hot showers, a baby changing room, a washing-up area and wifi.

Local attractions

This site’s well located for both restful and action-packed trips with a countryside or city theme. For slow-going sightseeing in a rural part of Pest county, get over to Gárdony, on the banks of Lake Velence (30 minutes’ drive), and laze in the warm shores of the local beaches or fish for carp, pike and eel from the banks. Not up for getting wet feet? Drop by the Dinnyés Marshes Nature Reserve (35 minutes) to spy the indigenous and migratory creatures that flit around the area; the István Chernel Birdwatching Tower is one of the best spots to see them from. Another watery place to while away the day is Lake Balaton (about an hour's drive) – head here to wander along a section of the 197-kilometre-long shoreline, to visit the vineyards and to trek the paths around the wetlands of Balaton Uplands National Park (two hours’ drive). Seeking city sights too? Head north for Budapest highlights like the humongous gothic revival Hungarian Parliament Building, the 19th-century Széchenyi Chain Bridge and the Fisherman’s Bastion Viewpoint. A ride on a boat bobbing down the Danube is also a must in this stunning city split in half by the mighty river.
