If living by a river sounds like a swell sort of stay, then peruse this site’s pics: you’ll also spot the mountain surroundings, splendid scenery and that it's all very spacious and pleasantly shaded too... Camping La Clarée lies in a greenly scenic spot in the Névache valley by the Clarée river, seven kilometres from Briançon and 10 kilometres from the Italian border, between the communes of Montgenèvre and Névache. It's an easy downhill pedal away from Val-des-Près, and is in an area primed for mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding, climbing, fishing and kayaking. Leisure time on site can be filled at the pool and paddling pool, or with volleyball, ping pong or pétanque. To keep the littlies amused, the kids’ club organises morning activities such as treasure hunts and workshops for making arches and arrows. Fodder’s well sorted at the snack bar which sells pizza and hot bites as well as breakfasts of tea, coffee, orange juice and sandwiches; guests can laso order bread and viennoiseries to be delivered direct from local bakeries. The site also has a barbecue rental service. Among the amenities are a spotless sanitary block, a laundry room with washers and dryers (tokens available at reception) and washing-up corners… And should you feel the urge to make contact with the outside world, there’s a computer to use at reception, plus a free wifi service out on the terrace.

Local attractions

If angling’s your sport, fishing is popular in the Clarée river next to the site; in the Durance and Cerveyrette rivers; and around the many mountain lakes near Val-des-Prés. A good golf course also lies 13 kilometres away in La Guisane. Popular hikes begin not far from base: from nearby Val-des-Près you can trek along the 16-kilometre Col de Dormillouse. Or venture over to Névache, 40 minutes’ bike ride away (or 20 minutes by car), to take an easy and pleasant trail up through the Clarée valley to the Fontcouverte waterfall, or explore the Col des Thures for spectacular views over Chavillon lake. Other good routes include the Aiguille Rouge from the Col de l’Echelle, and those around three of the region's lakes, Clarée, Rond and Grand Ban. Kayaking's another a tiptop pick around here, around Névache, Montgenèvre, Serre-Chevalier and Briançon; the latter is also a prime paragliding spot for braver souls. The Serre Chevalier Vallée is the spot for for skiing and snowboarding, and the Galibier, Izoard, Granon, Echelle and Montgenèvre mountain passes are top picks for cycling. Another spot within easy reach is Les Grands Bains du Monêtier, around half an hour’s drive away near the border of the Ecrins National Park, to visit the thermal springs for wellness treatments or long soaks.
