Horse riding in the Hautes-Alpes… have at it from Camping le Parc des Sérigons between Veynes and Gap, at the riding centre right next door. Have at it too with hiking and mountain bike trails too in the adjacent forest, or watersports on Lac de Serre-Ponçon and climbing in the mountainous Écrins National Park, both within day trip distance. The equestrian centre beside the site provides riding lessons as well as hacks into the surrounding Hautes-Alpes landscape. Small saddlers will also be able to have pony rides on site, part of a summer range of activities for kids over six that also includes crafts and outdoor games. (No long faces for grownups either: they get a winning pick of family-friendly evening entertainment like themed meals, karaoke, live music and discos.) There's a pool and a paddling on site here too, as well as a multisports field, tennis court, table tennis, playground and pétanque court. The bar-restaurant has free wifi and a takeaway service. Camping le Parc des Sérigons is two kilometres from the commune of La Roche-Des-Arnauds, which is 10 kilometres from department capital Gap.

Local attractions

Horse riding is much recommended around here, but if that's not your bag, the forest adjacent to the site has hiking and mountain bike trails to explore, or you could get stuck into some paddleboarding, kayaking, windsurfing and fishing at Lac de Serre-Ponçon 25 kilometres away. (If you're feeling lionhearted, zip along to the whitewater rafting of the Durance river, 35 kilometres from the site.) A more placid option is Domaine de Charance and its gardens (10 kilometres), made up of alpine greenery on the edge of Charance mounain a short drive from Gap. There are several shaded paths to potter along, plus a forest, a lake, streams, and terraces in front of the castle. Take the two-hour squirrel trail to end up at Rochasson for spectacular views of Gap and the surrounding countryside. It's four kilometres from the gardens to the town of Gap, where there's a Saturday morning market in the main square, and markets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays elsewhere in town. Climbing, a via ferrata climbing route, hiking and mountain biking are all popular in the Écrins National Park (30 kilometres), among its glacial valleys, mountains, pastures, lakes and woodland.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Large pitch, forest setting. Fresh bread & pastries to order for morning.

Disliked: Not enough pool sun loungers nowhere to sit or put towels.
