  • Peaceful site overlooking the Chardes Lake, with watersports nearby
  • Less than an hour's drive from Futuroscope theme park
  • Outdoor swimming pool and play area on site
There’s something just so relaxing about stays near water, non? And that’s just what you’ll get at Camping Lac de Chardes, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine town of L'Isle-Jourdain. A peaceful life it is indeed at this quiet site overlooking Chardes Lake and with the river Vienne running nearby. But an active life it can also be, with nearby activities and watersports including fishing, canoeing, kayaking, pedalos and waterskiing. Choose dry land instead and there's much to explore in the Vienne valley on foot, horseback or bike. Thrill seekers should focus attentions on the viaduct over the river Vienne, where bungee jumping awaits for a proper shot of adrenaline. If that sounds a tad extreme, opt instead for days back at base, where there’s an outdoor swimming pool, relaxation area and play area to keep the crew entertained. When hunger strikes, get comfy in the dining area to tuck into your home-cooked meals (from the barbecue, if you so fancy). Prefer to leave the cooking to someone else? The site is less than a kilometre from the city centre, so there are plenty of bars and restaurants within strolling distance, along with supermarkets.

Local attractions

Petrolheads may like to head to motor racing circuit Circuit du Val de Vienne (15 minutes' drive), where you can either watch races or get out on the track yourself (depending on how adventurous you’re feeling). Get an arty fix at the Abbey Church of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe (40 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site daubed with several well-preserved 11th- and 12th-century murals. Or head for the kid-friendly nostalgia of the collection of old cars, toys, dolls and ornaments at Museum Chez Manuel (50 minutes). For a bit of greenery, Parc floral de la Roseraie (50 minutes) is a pretty garden with an impressive collection of rose trees, and there are more gardens to see at Blossac Park (55 minutes), along with a rock garden and small zoo. There’s a fine choice of family days out within an hour's drive, each offering something a bit different. A tropical jungle filled with reptiles awaits at La Planète des Crocodiles (half an hour), or you can make pals with the primates at La Vallée des Singes (40 minutes). High-tech Futuroscope theme park (55 minutes), meanwhile, has enough rides, activities and shows to fill a full day out.
