  • A kilometre from the beach and oysters of Saint Trojan les Bains
  • Edged by the national forest of Saint-Trojan
  • Pool, play area, games room and snack wagon
Oysters! Camping Oléron Les Pins on the isle of Oléron is near the coastal town of Saint Trojan les Bains, a popular seaside resort that's also one of several spots on the island known for its oyster farming. Not a mollusc fan? Saint Trojan les Bains is where the island's thalassotherapy centre is based too. Forest fans are also sorted: excellent Oléron is famed for its wild woody areas as much as its 80 kilometres or so of coastline, and is edged by the 2,000 hectares of pines that make up the national forest of Saint-Trojan. These wooded paths are tiptop for hiking, horse riding and cycling, or you can amble the kilometre or so through the forest down to the beach (and oysters) of Saint Trojan les Bains. Back at base, the site is well set up for days away from the beach and oyster sampling, with a pool and a play area, a pétanque court, volleyball pitch and ping pong tables, and a games room with board games and books. The snack wagon, open on May bank holiday weekends and in July and August, dishes up drinks, sweet crêpes, salads and homemade pizzas to have on the terrace; free wifi is available nearby. Bread and croissants can be ordered to pick up freshly baked in the morning. For the practicalities, Camping Oléron Les Pins has toilet and shower blocks, a laundry area with washing machine and dryer (tokens on sale at reception), and a motorhome service point. Info on Oléron and more can be had at the friendly reception area, which also has free internet and a campers' corner selling essential camping and outdoorsy bits and bobs like tent pegs, torches, matches, ponchos and compasses.

Local attractions

Wander through the forest from Camping Olérons Les Pins to see the colourful beach huts, 19th-century villas and the oyster harvesting of Saint Trojan les Bains, then take the Saint-Trojan miniature train from here on the hour and a half journey to Pertuis de Maumusson via the national forest, several beaches and the blue waters of Gatseau bay. Oléron is the biggest island off the French Atlantic coast and has heaps more to see and do around its 170ish square kilometres: recommended options are the mammoth waterside fortress of La Citadelle, pottering around the several fishing ports along the coast and snapping scenic shots from the Chassiron Lighthouse over the east coast of the island, Fort Boyard and the islands of Ré, Aix and beyond (fair warning: the lighthouse viewpoint is 224 steps up). The town of Saint Pierre d'Oléron is also well worth a look, or you could just take to the waters to tackle Oléron's waves for surfing and windsurfing.
