  • Dog-friendly wildlife haven nine miles from the coast
  • A 20-minute drive from Le Tréport; 40 minutes from Baie de Somme
  • Fishing lakes, watersports, horse riding and clubhouse on site
From royal towns and fortified castles to cable cars, watersports and little fishing villages, family-friendly site Domaine Du Lieu Dieu is well situated for a whole raft of holiday pursuits. On the border between Picardy and Normandy, 20 minutes’ drive away from Le Tréport and 40 minutes from Baie de Somme, the coast is well within reach too. Here, you’ll get to kick back on a 170-acre wildlife haven that was once the grounds of a Cistercian abbey. Water-based activities may very well feature into your stay, as the site is on the banks of the river Bresle, with lakes in the surrounding area and the Foret d'Eu five kilometres away – and the site runs watersports, too. You may want to add fishing, cycling or horse riding to your itinerary… or perhaps you’ll first want to set off on foot to explore the surrounding countryside, valleys, forests, cliffs or pebble and sandy beaches? The site has fishing lakes (free to use), as well as 70 horses and ponies. The monks’ garden has been converted into a horse riding centre with stables, saddlery, an outdoor arena and two indoor arenas so guests can get stuck into lessons, rides among the lakes, forests and valleys to see the local wildlife, or a canter along the Baie de Somme. If you’re hungry after all of that, barbecues are permitted or there’s a clubhouse that serves food (including pancakes for dinner). Handily, there are showers, toilets and wifi on site too for a comfy break.

Local attractions

Coast calling? There are pebble beaches at Mesnil Val (25 minutes' drive) and Mers-les-Bains (20 minutes) – a prime place for watersports and live shows. Le Crotoy (45 minutes) is a characterful little place with a sandy beach while Le Tréport (20 minutes) is a little bigger with tall cliffs (thankfully, a cable car is on hand), fish restaurants, a casino and boat trips. Scenery shines through at Somme Bay (half an hour) – good competition for Saint-Valery-sur-Somme (35 minutes), a seaport and resort on the Somme estuary with medieval ramparts, a Gothic church and a long boardwalk. You’ll catch a lively watersports scene at Base Outdoor Gamaches (10 minutes), a lake where you may launch your own equipment or hire from the activity centre, which runs lessons too. Back on dry land, Eu (10 minutes) is close by. This royal town has a cathedral church, Louis Philippe’s castle, parks, gardens, chapels and many a narrow street. Elsewhere, the fortifications of Chateau Fort de Rambures (20 minutes), the ornithological park at Park Marquenterre (50 minutes), Le Bois de Cise’ woodlands (20 minutes) or the marshes and birdhouses at La Réserve d'Avifaune du Hable d'Ault (25 minutes) are all worthy stops.

Liked: The scenery the location was great. The accommodation was overall okay we did have some issues and it was difficult to communicate with anyone one site because of language differences but this is also our fault

Disliked: The shower was too hot and my son burnt his shoulder on the hot water supply to the shower on the first day which is super dangerous. We had no plug for the kitchen sink and the bathroom sink was leaking which my husband had to fix himself.

2 bedroom gypsy wagon

Liked: This was a fabulous break away for us all. I have 2 boys 10 & 12 and the horse riding & the paddle boarding was amazing for them. In a lovely setting. Really very peaceful.

Disliked: We stayed in the gypsy caravan Jasmine. Was small but well equipped. Just niggling little things like cupboard handles broken & the lamps turning. You could also see where a mirror had come off the wall and not been replaced. The caravan just needs some TLC nothing to detract from the holiday.

Also the bracelet deposit is actually 300 euros not 200 which to be fair is quite a big difference so think this should be updated.

There was no wakeboarding available either, this has been taken down and I feel this should be something you are made a aware of
