Like to flit between beaches, wineries and historical cities during a break abroad? Then Le Cerisier Anglais in the Loire-Atlantique department on the edge of the Vendée will seem cherrypicked for you. As well as being well set to get to the top sights in western France, a stay at this lush park is about unwinding in a south-facing paddock with top countryside views, swathes of trees and a chance to spot woodpeckers, jays and owls.
Being away from road traffic and having no light pollution, Le Cerisier Anglais is pretty and peaceful both day and night, but only a five-minute drive from the local village of Touvois for bakeries, a small shop and a tobacconist (plus an organic market every Saturday morning with stallholders selling fruit, veg, coffee, bread and local meat). For a bigger urban centre, Saint-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu 15 minutes away has a large supermarket, Sunday food and clothing market, as well as splash-worthy indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
Done with your dip? Walking and cycling can be had straight from the site – a small number of bikes are available to rent – and you can also borrow a barbecue for cooking up nosh.
If bimbling along to the beaches on the Côte de Lumière is more your bag, the wide and sandy La Davière is 40 minutes’ drive away while the Grand Plage of Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, for surfing and supping drinks in seaside bars, is 45 minutes by car.

Chug along to the Vélo-Rail a 25-minute drive from the park for touristy train journeys – powered by your own pedalling – through the French countryside before taking a well-deserved rest and moving on to the former capital of ancient Brittany, Nantes (50 minutes from the site), for leisurely wanders round the history museum in the Château des Ducs de Bretagne. You can also aim for the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul or the medieval Bouffay district for architecture-admiring sessions – or simply skip towards the fancy shops in the 19th-century Passage Pommeraye mall.
Craving the outdoors again? A mighty pretty place to while away an afternoon is the Nantes botanical gardens and tropical greenhouses, spanning more than seven hectares and created by sailors bringing seeds from abroad over the last 300 years or so.
For yet another way to step back into the region’s past, take yourself off to the Marais salants de la Vie 40 minutes away, an area of restored salt-production marshes with guided tours.
