It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly rural site in the Nord department
- A 20-minute drive from Saint-Omer and Hazebrouck
- Outdoor pool, miniature golf, food shop, café-bar and playground
In the rural Nord department and within a 20-minute drive of Saint-Omer and Hazebrouck, Camping La Chaumière is a place where you can mix up city and the country time, all set in an area of deep tradition and history. This family-friendly site in Buysscheure makes a fab base for days of rural cycling and walking, or for gentle strolls around historic towns.
And while there's plenty going on in the area, there's also a fine mix of on-site activities to fit into your schedule. What activities, exactly? Well, families, couples and solo travellers alike can get stuck into the outdoor pool, miniature golf, trampolines, play areas and carp fishing on site. And if that's not enough to be getting on with, the surrounding flat landscape invites cycling or strolling, all with nature’s soundtrack in the background.
Foodies have plenty to enjoy too, as there is an on-site bistro-style bar (sit-down meals on Friday and Saturday – booking required) plus Sunday lunches with locals-approved dishes whipped up by the on-site chef.
Self-catering is on the cards too, as barbecues are permitted on site. Handily, there's a food shop on site, along with a bar and restaurant just under a kilometre away in the village. If you're the sort whose taste buds take you further afield, try some of the fresh seafood in the coastal towns of Gravelines or Dunkirk (both 40 minutes' drive), head over the border to Belgium for some authentic frites, or browse the three weekly markets in Saint-Omer (20 minutes).

Local attractions
Watch the cows graze among the ruins at Abbaye de Clairmarais (10 minutes' drive), and see how traditional country living is still alive and well at Cassel (15 minutes), a town with classic Flemish features and a long-standing windmill.
You might find a suitable souvenir deep in the markets of Hazebrouck (20 minutes) or Saint-Omer (20 minutes), where museums and ruins of an old abbey also offer a deep dive into the area’s history. Unusually, in Gravelines (40 minutes) the best way to explore the city’s moats and ramparts is by pedalo. Fuel up on local seafood in the harbour before you set off. Meanwhile, a city once turned to rubble in World War I, Ypres (50 minutes) is now a minefield of monuments, museums, and cathedrals.
If you’re longing for something more fast-paced, take your pick from the rumble of rollercoasters to gentler carousels and bumper cars at Dennlys Parc (45 minutes).
