  • Within a couple of minutes' drive of the spa town of Vittel
  • Four golf courses, paintballing, casino and Olympic pool all in town
  • Spacious pitches separated by hedges for peace and privacy
Rather niftily, the spa town of Vittel is only a couple of minutes' drive from Camping de Vittel. And why is this a handy state of affairs? Because this comely Lorraine region and Vosges department site is deep in outdoor activity country, set among cycling and horse riding land, and close to spectacularly scenic hikes like those around Relanges and the forest around Gironcourt-sur-Vraine. Much more of the same, along with wildlife watching, climbing and watersports, can be dived into at the Ballons des Vosges Nature Park about an hour away: whichever option you go for from this frenzy of activity, it's only about 15 minutes' walk from your return to the site to get to the thermal baths and indulgent treatments of Vittel's main spa. And if you don't want to wander into town? Hang around pitchside to relax instead: Camping de Vittel's spacious accommodation areas are separated by hedges to ensure maximum comfort and privacy, and are shaded by trees so you don't bake too much on a blazing summer day. Also rather niftily with this site, the well-maintained amenities are a short potter from the pitching areas so you don't have far to go to access the essentials. These are made up of modern blocks fully kitted out to suit families with young kids or guests with reduced mobility; a laundry room and a washing-up area are also available. Leisure facilities include a playground and a TV room. At reception, you can also order your bread and croissants to munch upon for breakfast, lunch, elevenses and general snacks.

Liked: This was a lovely site: the pitches were substantial and private; the facilities were clean and well looked after (you don’t find many sanitary areas where music is playing!) You can order bread daily and there’s a regular visit from a grocer’s van and a pizza van. It’s also only a short walk into the town.

Local attractions

Spas, beauty salons and general facilities of the pampering variety are about a kilometre and a half away at Vittel, where you can book sessions to treat a range of ailments, or just to treat yourself after a long day's hiking around the region. Away from the spas, dip into the Vittel museum if you want to learn more about the heritage and spa history of the town, or spend some time in the casino if your newly rejuvenated self is feeling somewhat fortunate. There are four golf courses in town too, as well as an Olympic pool, tennis courts, miniature golf, paintballing and treetop adventuring. For walks in the region, take the 10-kilometre 'crown trail' (Circuit 9) through the forest surrounding the nearby town of Gironcourt-sur-Vraine, or make for Relanges for the marked circular path through the village and forest. At Contrexéville, under 15 minutes' drive away, have more forest hikes around 15,000 woodland hectares, or venture over to the lakes for boating, fishing and free summer swimming. Domrémy-la-Pucelle, the birthplace of Joan of Arc, is 45 minutes' drive away. The Château de Haroué is within the same distance, in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle.
