General
- Peaceful site on the banks of the Loire river in Briare
- Handy stopover for cyclists on the Loire à Velo path
- Heated swimming pool, playground and pétanque on site
Hurrah for the Loire Valley, with its fab mix of châteaux, vineyards and scenic active days out. And hurrah for Briare, a laidback little Loiret town with both riverbank and tree-lined canal to wander along, and home to the longest metal bridge in all of France (designed by none other than Monsieur Eiffel, of Parisian tower-constructing fame).
And double hurrah for Camping Le Martinet, a peaceful site with a scenic setting on the banks of the Loire and a pleasant 15 minutes’ amble from Briare’s shops, restaurants and other amenities. This is a particularly fine spot for cyclists – its nifty location on the route of the Loire à Velo bike path makes it both a handy stopover for intrepid types taking in the full 800-kilometre epic and a staging post for fairweather folks seeking a pretty place to pedal.
It’s not just the two-wheeled travellers that will appreciate the easy access to the river: it’s also a bonus for folks seeking fishing, canoeing and riverside walks too. Swims aren’t allowed in the river, but there’s a heated pool on site that makes a fine place for an open-air dip.
Time spent on site is likely to be taken up mainly with chilling out, but there are games of pétanque and miniature golf to play if you need a little gentle activity, and a playground to keep the nippers happy. Other amenities around the wooded park include a launderette, washing-up area and bathrooms with accessible facilities.

Local attractions
Begin with a bit of bimbling around Briare – it’ll take you 15 minutes or so to wander into the town centre to visit its best bits, including Château Trousse-Barrière, the mosaic museum and the Briare Canal Bridge. Boat trips along the Loire (short ones, long ones, fancy ones with dinner included) are a good way to see some of the surrounds, and the town’s also got a swimming pool with waterslides and spa for family splashing.
One château not enough? Set off for Château Gien and its hunting museum (15 minutes’ drive), medieval Château Saint-Brisson-sur-Loire (20 minutes) and Château de Sully-sur-Loire (35 minutes), built on three islands in the river. And if you’ve ever wondered how they did it all, get along to Guédelon (40 minutes away), where a bunch of folks are recreating a 13th-century castle from scratch using traditional techniques; they’ll let you have a go at some yourselves if you’re there at the right time.
The Loire Valley’s famed for its libations too, of course – if you’re into your crisp whites, Sancerre (45 minutes away) is a super starting point for a day (or few) of tours and tastings.
