The playground

General

  • Friendly Loire Valley site in green surroundings
  • A certified Accueil Vélo site, connected to La Loire à Vélo
  • Restaurant, bar, grocery shop, playground, library and TV room

Cycling types – get geared up. Taking to two wheels is a cinch from Camping Les Peupliers in Indre-et-Loire… all the way to the Atlantic coast should you feel so inclined.

A certified Accueil Vélo site (that's 'bike friendly' to wheelie enthusiasts who don't speak the lingo), Les Peupliers is connected to a track of vast bike path La Loire à Vélo, running along the Loire river and through the Loire Valley all the way west to the coast near Nantes. The trail covers 800 kilometres if you're in a fortunate enough position to ride as much of it as poss (cushion at the ready), but if you can't quite manage to saddle up that much, shorter stretches such as the 11-kilometre run to Tours are all around too.

Camping Les Peupliers is a short bike ride – or a couple of minutes' drive, if your seat is overly sore – from the town of Montlouis-sur-Loire in the Loire Valley, within easy reach of Tours, Amboise and the ZooParc de Beauval – although as it's 45 kilometres away you may want to drive to this last one…

The site has been set up for cosy and comfy family stays, where kids can get busy while adults get relaxed: the good-sized playground with swings, climbing frame and ping pong tables is set scenically among grass and trees so grownups can stretch out with a book and a carefree attitude while keeping an eye on their offspring, and the library and TV room has board games and a pool table so the kids don't get bored while you finish your blockbuster. Also splendidly, the lively entertainment team can whisk your teenies off in high sesaon for days of frolics and games at the kids' club while you find a serene sunbathing spot.

There's a grocery store selling fresh local produce if your energy levels are high enough after a day's cycling to wield the barbecue tongs; if not, a restaurant-pizzeria awaits, or you can have a snack at the bar.

A free public pool is a 50-metre amble away for dips in July and August. But back to the biking – quite handliy for a region so dedicated to cycling, bike hire is available on site for those who haven't brought their own wheels,

Great location for cycling along the Loire - Tours and Amboise are well worth a visit and are easy to get to along the cycle path (no cars).
The pitches are flat and spacious and you can choose your own. Friendly and welcoming staff with some basic groceries available. The municipal swimming pool next door is great; two pools and a separate sun bathing area. The pool is free to use by customers of the site.
Toilet/shower blocks are good and very clean - the showers lacked a little power on this visit - we have stayed here before for an overnight stop. This site is great for those cycling the Loire as it has lots of space for pitching tents.

We have stayed here a few times over the years, it’s a great base for Loire Valley ,
Very pleasant welcome from a young lady

    Disliked:

The disabled facilities were in a disgraceful state, dirty and unusable. The other facilities were not very clean either.

As mentioned above we have stayed here a few times, and it has always been adequate.

Also we were told gate opened at 7 o clock, 10 past a man emerged, obviously just got up, opened gate without any acknowledgement at all.
Dog barking tied up by a tent, nothing done.

We certainly will not stay again

From the manager...

Hello and thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that your stay was not up to your expectations and take note of your remarks to improve.
However, we are surprised because our infrastructure is modern and we make several passages in the day in the bathroom to ensure the best possible comfort.
Moreover, in order to have a peaceful stay, we close the camping gates for security reasons at night. On request, we will open for early departure or late arrival.

The site/ toilet block was really clean (essential for me!). Showers were well thought out and hot!) . The staff were friendly and helpful (and spoke some English!). Lovely that you could order bread etc the night before for collection the next morning. Although I didn’t use them it had good play facilities for kids on site - free use of very close swim pool - launderette - pool table and a fair deal of other stuff. The site was well laid out in ‘zones’ so that, for example, solo campers were in a different area than groups. Perfectly situated for Château exploration. Over all I thought it was an excellent site!

    Disliked:

There were only 2 things against the site. As a light sleeper they were fairly important.

The first is totally out of their control. It was a bit noisy. Trains, Motor bikes, and traffic (and local cockerel at sun rise!!) were ever present.

Secondly, The lighting all around the camp site was reassuring for late night trips to the toilet block but did mean that it was it was really bright all night inside the tent! Don’t pitch right in front of a light ( or perhaps they could be switched off at midnight !?)

From the manager...

Local attractions

La Loire à Vélo runs for 800 kilometres through six French departments, along the Loire river for two thirds of its route, and greenways, low traffic roads and bike trails for the rest. If you really want to go for it and there's unlimited time at your disposal, the Loire à Vélo is part of the spectacular Eurovéloroute stretching for 3,650 kilometres between the Atlantic Ocean and the Black Sea. (Wistful sigh.)

Bike along the route to splendid Tours, about 35 minutes by pedal, for a mosey around its cathedral, fine arts museum and fine municipal botanical garden, followed by a browse around the city's food and flower markets. For a gentler time, ride the couple of kilometres via Rue Christophe Plantin to arrive in local town Montlouis-sur-Loire, where there's the Maison de la Loire museum on the Loire region, and the handsome 15th-century manor house of the Château de la Bourdaisière, now home to a somewhat famed tomato conservatory housing over 500 varieties (that's a lot of salads).

As it's the Loire Valley, châteaux and vineyards are easily reached too, many by bike within about 45 minutes' ride. A cycle of around 40 minutes on the local greenway will take you to the splendid gardens of the Château de Valmer, where you can also thoughtfully taste local wines from Vouvray and Touraine.

Within an hour and a half – or about 40 minutes by car – is Château de Villandry, or you could pedal 50 minutes or so to Amboise, to view the medieval Château d’Amboise and the Château de Close Luce, where arty Leonardo da Vinci once lived.

A pétanque court is 100 metres from the site; go-karting is two kilometres away, and a golf course is within four. Or take the kids to marvel at the depths of the Grand Aquarium of Touraine, about half an hour's drive from the site.
