Manoir de L'Abbaye: Shaded or sunny pitches

General

  • Set around a 17th-century converted farmhouse 10 minutes from Bayeux
  • Half an hour's drive from the D-Day landing beaches
  • Pick fruit from the site trees for free

All manner of fan holiday picks are on offer around this manor – with beaches, châteaux, outdoor activities and famed historical attractions (in the form of the Bayeux Tapestry and the D-Day landing beaches) all close at hand, this is a mighty strategic spot to settle in for a bit of Normandy pottering.

And it’s not just the surrounds that are most excellent at Manoir de L' Abbaye – the place itself is pretty special too... Set 10 minutes’ drive from Bayeux, this pretty traditional 17th-century former farmhouse is now set up to welcome guests to a peaceful rural retreat. Come armed with a bottle to crack open after dark, as it’s most likely you’ll be wanting to spend a bit of time sitting out gazing up into the sky as the stars come out.

The friendly folks on site are happy for you to pluck fresh fruit from their trees, and they’ll also have fresh bread and croissants ready for your brekkie in the mornings. More substantial eats can be catered for at the supermarkets, shops and restaurants in Bayeux; feel free to bring your wares back to site for a barbie too.

Also on site are a play area for the tots and (naturellement) a pétanque court for those très traditional games à la français.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Everything it was just perfect. It was a quiet and tranquil little gem of a site and central to Bayeux and the Normandy beaches. The walled garden was like going back in time and was so picturesque. Iris the dog was a delightful chief assistant to Madame and showed us where to pitch up. It just felt like home.

Pitch wheryou want and in a lovely setting of a walled garden and orchard!
Very friendly owner and her dog !
Good overnight stop for the ferry ! 5 mins drive from bayeux ! The tapestry is a must and there is a eleclerc there for the wine run !

    Disliked:

Facilities could do with a revamp but they were clean and water was up ing hot
Entrance was a bit tight for a 7.5 metre caravan but getting out was worse at 0630
No restaurants in the vicinity as it s in a small village and the church bell tolls every half hour but you soon get used to it !
Campsite possibly does food to order as there was a sign but we didn't ask about it as we had enough supplies of our own .

Very peaceful surroundings, the lady who ran the camping ground was very pleasant. Close proximity to Bordeaux, could easily be cycled in 20 to 30 minutes or so through nice countryside. Nice quiet walks, beautiful buildings were well worth seeing.

    Disliked:

My own fault, although I booked an electric pitch I hadn’t noticed that it was the continental fitting therefore did not actually have access as I did not have the adaptor. No local shop, at least I did not see one.
Although there was only one toilet on site it was quiet enough in September and was not an issue.

We booked this site as a one night stop over on the way to get the ferry from Oestreham at 8.30am the next morning so we were only there about 12 hours. However the site was lovely, very peaceful and we were particularly taken with Iris the resident dog. The showers and toilets are quite old but seemed clean and tidy and fine for our needs for one night.

Beautiful site, very peaceful and a great location to explore the Normandy D Day beaches and memorials from. Showers basic but very clean and the water was always hot! Yvette is a lovely lady and our children adored her dog Irene!

    Disliked:

Not a lot to dislike although if you want more options for children ( park, swimming pool etc ) then another campsite might suit you better.

Local attractions

Bayeux 10 minutes away is quite rightly famed for its medieval tapestry (getting on for a hefty 70 metres long); also in town are a couple of good museums including the splendid Musée Baron Gerard.

It’s also worth heading over to Caen, 20 minutes away, to visit the medieval Abbaye-aux-Hommes and the castle commissioned by William the Conqueror. More recent history is commemorated in the form of museums, cemeteries and monuments at the D-Day landing beaches around Arromanches-les-Bains and Omaha Beach, around half an hour away.

For a bit of fresh air, there are some fab walking trails and watersports (including canoeing and windsurfing) in the Marais du Cotentin Regional Natural Park. Or pack up your bucket and spade and make for the sandy beaches of Asnelles or Courseulles-sur-Mer, both around 20 minutes away.
