It's free, quick and easy!
- Family glampsite at Urrugne on the Basque coast, Pyrénées-Atlantiques
- Plage de Socoa 10 minutes’ drive and elegant Biarritz half an hour
- Swimming pool, daily entertainment, a restaurant and snack bar on site
When it’s all about relaxing – with friends, family or your beloved – it’s all about Kampaoh Urrugne, a wonderfully chilled sort of glamping site at Urrugne on the Basque coast. And you can be as laid back as you want on site, as everything’s done for you – even the well-equipped, smartly designed tents are all ready and waiting for your arrival.
Being able to relax from the moment you arrive doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do, however. Set on a leafy private park covering five hectares, the site has plenty going on for anyone who wants to join in. During high season, various activities kick off at the pool complex, including aqua gym and water polo to keep everybody feeling at their physical best.
There are entertainment programmes and sports events suitable for all ages scheduled for daytime and evening. The campsite is also near some of the region’s best beaches (Socoa Beach and Grande Plage in Saint-Jean-de-Luz are both 10 minutes’ drive), and there are several hiking routes and golf courses nearby.
Alternatively, of course, you can forgo all this rushing around and simply spend your time drifting between the poolside sun deck and the restaurant bar, with a glass of chilled white wine in hand.

Local attractions
The kids will probably demand a day on a Basque Coast beach; luckily for them you have a choice. Overlooked by a 17th-century fortress, Socoa Beach (10 minutes’ drive) is popular for watersports, while sheltered Grande Plage in Saint-Jean-de-Luz (also 10 minutes) has a kids’ club and lifeguards in summer, as well as a sprinkling of cafés and ice-cream shops on the seafront promenade.
You’ll spot more beaches when hiking along the spectacular Basque Corniche (five minutes), edging the clifftops between Urrugne and Hendaye (two hours’ walk). When weather and tide conditions are right, you may also get to spot the Giant Belharra Wave, a 20-metre monster that expert surfers from all over the world come to conquer.
Urban day trips might include a visit to sophisticated Biarritz (half an hour), where kids can watch 4D movies in the interactive Cité de l’Océan (20 minutes) and you can plunder the hallowed portals of covered Les Halles market for picnics to eat on Plage de la Côte des Basques. After an afternoon spent on Playa de la Zurriola in Spain’s Basque city of San Sebastian (half an hour), enjoy fine dining in award-winning restaurants or go tapas-bar hopping for the region’s pintxo kebabs.
