Browsing for a base that bridges the gap between having a comfy stay and an adventurous hol in the Périgord Noir? Park up at Camping Le Pont de Mazerat, in a nifty location in the Dordogne’s Tamniès, for your foray to this fantastic French region. With a heated outdoor swimming pool surrounded by loungers, plus a playground and trampolines to keep the nippers active when they’re not splashing about, the site is well equipped for family stays. It’s also a short stroll away from Tamniès’ lake – which has an inflatable obstacle course and a sandy beach – if you fancy swapping the pool for a dip in the water or settling down for a bit of fishing. So that’s playtime covered, but what about mealtimes? A bakery and small supermarket are on site for ordering fresh bread, baguettes and pastries for breakfast; for later in the day, the bar and restaurant serve up dishes including traditional Périgord specialities. Tuck into eats on the terrace – be it big meaty plates or smaller tapas dishes – and wash everything down with cocktails and coffee. If you’d rather get back to the action sharpish (or just fancy a bit of personal time), takeaways are available. When it comes to planning days out, there’s wifi to help with plotting hiking and mountain biking routes leaving from the site, and a launderette’s on base for freshening up your gear post-trek.

Local attractions

This site is close to some of the Périgord Noir’s prettiest towns and villages. Stroll around the medieval buildings of Sarlat-la-Canéda or go further back in time at Les Eyzies, a village known for its prehistoric displays at the National Museum of Prehistory (both 15 minutes’ drive). Underground explorers might also like to investigate the cavern of Lascaux (15 minutes), famed for the 600 parietal wall paintings adorning the atmospheric spot’s walls and ceilings. More into man-made structures? Shoot off for the Château de Commarque (15 minutes) – even if you’re not a fan of old buildings, this hillside castle is worth a visit if only to gaze at the scenic views over the valley of the La Beune river. Another cool castle with tip-top views is Château de Beynac (25 minutes), set 150 metres above the Dordogne; for sights that are just as scenic, pop Les Jardins de Marqueyssac (25 minutes) and Château de Castelnaud (half an hour) on your itinerary as well.
