- Peaceful and friendly family site in the Périgord Noir
- Away from busy roads but within 15 minutes of Les Eyzies and Sarlat
- Indoor and outdoor pools, restaurant and grocery shop
Laidback family hols in a peaceful and scenic setting are the boxes ticked at the Périgord Noir's Camping Les Charmes... and might you seek some famed sightseeing too? Done: this handsome Dordogone site is an easy 15 minutes' drive from spectacular Sarlat, and only 10 from the stunning and world-famed UNESCO World Heritage Site and archaeological heritage of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil and Lascaux cave.
All ages are fully looked after here: big folk can take dips in the heated indoor pool at the entrance of the site, sunbathe by the outdoor pool, or play pétanque or tennis, while small folk can zip down the pool's waterslide or whirl about the sports field. The indoor pool opens when the site does and the outdoor one is open from April to October, depending on the weather.
No need to leave the site either for essentials and eats, as the Table des Charmes restaurant (with spectacular views from its terrace) is open every evening in July and August; barbecues are allowed on site, and the food shop will keep you supplied with most of what you need. A bakery is in the scenic and ancient little village of Saint André d'Allas, 10 minutes' away.
Free wifi is available on site around the main building.

Local attractions
The most famed tourist destination close to the site, Les Eyzies, can keep you occupied for days: this spectacular set of archaeological attractions is part of the UNESCO-listed Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley and has stacks to see both inside and out.
The best known of the lot is probably Lascaux cave, home to around 600 cave paintings made over several generations; archaeology aficionados should also see the Font-de-Gaume cave for more paintings, and the stalactites and stalagmites of the Grotte du Grand-Roc in its cliffside setting overlooking the Vézère valley. Delve into the extensive tale of all these at the splendid National Museum of Prehistory, which has 12,000 exhibits as well as plenty of activities for families.
Next up should be stunning Sarlat, rightly hailed as one of the top medieval towns in France and still with a properly ye olde feel as the powers that be in town have sensibly avoided any extensive redevelopment. Among the many sights to see are the Place de la Liberté (indoor food market here = a must), the 15th and 16th century mansions, the Benedictine abbey and the 14th-century Sarlat Cathedral.
