  • Pre-pitched tents at a family site on the banks of the Ourthe river
  • A half-hour walk from La Roche-en-Ardenne; fishing on site
  • Restaurant, games and playground; summer swimming pool access
You may be off to the Belgian Ardennes for a quiet time, birdwatching and hiking your way through this scenic area, or you may be aiming for a more active family break packed with days of mountain biking, quad biking and adventure parks… either way, a pre-pitched tent at Camping La Roche would make a great base from which to do your exploring. This Wallonia site is in a spot that mixes up rural scenery with easy access to urban amenities: it’s in a scenic location on the banks of the river Ourthe, two kilometres from the pretty town of La Roche-en-Ardenne (a good place to find shops and restaurants as well as book outings and activities). From here you can set out on hiking, mountain biking and kayaking outings pretty much straight from the site, source horse riding days close by or simply stay on site to see whether you can hook any trout from the river. Games of mini football, volleyball, table tennis and pétanque are also options for those spending some time on site, and there’s a playground to keep the kids busy too. Ready for some chillout time after all that activity? Take a table at the restaurant for relaxed family meals or pop next door to the adjacent hotel to use its swimming pool (open in July and August) and wellness area.

Local attractions

There’s only one place to start your tour of the local area, and that’s in La Roche-en-Ardenne itself, wandering around the 11th-century castle (which often hosts bird of prey displays) and riverside sculpture park. You can hire kayaks and play miniature golf in town too. There are lots of places to get out for walks nearby, on the banks of the river or through nearby forests – if you need a few ideas, perhaps try hikes around the Barrage de Nisramont (20 minutes’ drive), the Domain of the Caves of Han (40 minutes) or the Waterfalls of Coo (40 minutes). A trip to the treetop trails of Parc Chlorophylle (20 minutes) should be on the cards too if you’d like to see some of the scenery from a few metres off the ground. Family days out are plentiful around here: meet the animals at Le Parc à Gibier, learn a bit about the past at Musée de la Bataille des Ardennes (both five minutes), or aim for the stars with an outing to the Euro Space Center (35 minutes). And might an insight into the making of the sweet treats at Chocolatier Defroidmont (half an hour) be a tasty way to spend some time?
