  • Irish-Austrian family site on the banks of the Maltschacher See
  • Klagenfurt's museums and shops 20 minutes' drive away
  • Watersports/lake swimming on site, plus restaurant by the water
Lakeside life… it’s all gorgeous views, watersports and swims – and mighty fine it is too for folk staying at Camping Maltschacher Seewirt, a family-run site slap bang on the banks of the Maltschacher See, 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Feldkirchen in Kärnten. That, of course, means some splendid scenery to admire as you sunbathe on the lakeside decks, and the ability to dive into the clear waters whenever you get a little toasty around the edges. If there’s one thing that can improve upon those lake views it’s having something tasty to eat while you take them in – that’s sorted both morning and evening at the site’s award-winning restaurant. Fresh breakfasts and a menu of good-value regional dinner dishes can be served up out on the restaurant terrace or packed up to take away to a scenic spot of your choice should you wish. Scenery aside, this peaceful site is also well located for all sorts of days out, including mountain hikes, lake cruises, bike rides, zoo days and urban wanderings in Klagenfurt, 20 minutes away. Stick around on site and there’s still plenty of activity: games of tennis and pétanque are on hand, and the friendly team here can help hook you up with days of canoeing, windsurfing or horse riding nearby.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Fabulous campsite in a beautiful location. The lake is simply stunning and great for a cooling dip. Immaculately clean. Excellent hot showers and the toilets are the cleanest I've seen on a campsite. The food is out of this world! Highly recommend the tomato soup and sea trout with risotto. The waiting staff took the time to explain every dish in English. Everything is tip top and we had a fantastic stay. Thanks for having us!

Local attractions

The lake is a properly pretty thing, but don’t stop there – there’s much more scenery to admire in the surrounds. If you can’t get enough of the watery views, start with a cruise on the rather larger Ossiacher See from Ossiach (20 minutes’ drive) or schlep over to the Tscheppaschlucht waterfalls (45 minutes). The mountains are pretty fab too – Turracherhöhe (45 minutes) is a fab place to start a hilly hike, or take the lift up the Pyramidenkogel Tower (40 minutes) for some epic views without such leg-busting efforts – the highest wooden viewing tower in the world is also home to Europe’s tallest indoor tunnel slide for folk who fancy coming back to earth at high speed. Klagenfurt (20 minutes) is certainly worth a stop too – stroll around the Old Town, peruse the paintings at the modern art museum and pretend to be a giant for the day among all the miniature buildings at Minimundus theme park. If you need more ideas for kid-friendly days out, take a look at Rosegg Zoo (half an hour) and Affenberg Landskron monkey park (35 minutes).
