If Dunk Island looks familiar, it’s highly possible that’s because it’s the kind of place that you’ve been daydreaming about on dreary winter days – all sparkling blue seas and white sand beaches flanked by gently swaying palms.
There are some pretty fab views out towards the island (as you may have guessed) from Dunk Island View Caravan Park, and it’s a cinch to get out there with a four-kilometre journey in a water taxi. You don’t have to get on a boat for a gorgeous beach though – the mainland beach of Mission Beach is rather swoon-worthy too, and has the advantage of being right there next to the park. Rainforest tours and Great Barrier Reef boat trips are close by for those times when you’re not basking beachside.
The park itself is a chilled-out place staffed by friendly folks who are happy to help out with tour booking and all sorts of advice. There’s plenty of space to relax around the place, perhaps reclining on a lounger by the pool or munching on fish and chips at the café. Barbecues are on hand for those who’d rather sizzle their own sausages, along with a camp kitchen for indoor catering.
Further restaurants and a playground are just outside the site, and there’s a supermarket a 15-minute walk away.

Mission Beach is quite a hub for all kinds of boat trips around this part of the Queensland coast – as well as those runs over to Dunk Island, you can take fishing trips locally or get up to the Great Barrier Reef in 45 minutes or so for scuba diving and snorkelling. If you fancy paddling about at your own pace, there are sea kayaks to be hired in Mission Beach.
Should you require an adrenaline kick after all this seaside relaxation, sign up for a whitewater rafting on the nearby Tully River or leap out of a plane for epic coastal views on a tandem skydive.
There’s more stunning scenery to be seen in the national parks that surround Mission Beach – Djiru and Mount Mackay National Parks among them. Local operators can take you out to explore by bike, canoe, four wheel drive or boat and give tips on how to spot lurking critters including saltwater crocodiles.
