  • Peaceful park on the outskirts of Eden, close to the A1 main road
  • Five minutes' drive from one of Australia's best whale watching areas
  • Swimming pool, playground, pedal car rentals and barbecue area
Stunning beaches, excellent whale watching, scenic national parks – there’s a reason why they call this place Eden. This little slice of paradise, on the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales, has the added bonus of being remarkably easy to get to, being handily located just off the A1 main coast road from Melbourne to Sydney. Eden Gateway Holiday Park is on the outskirts of the little seaside town of Eden, a five-minute drive or 20-minute walk from shops, restaurants and the local golf club. Settle in here for a little while (or a long while, ideally) and you’ll find plenty to do both within the site and in the scenic surrounds. The site’s leisure area has a playground, jumping pillow, pedal car rentals, basketball area and an outdoor pool for cooling off on summer days. Naturally there’s a barbie area, niftily placed within view of the playground so the tiddlers can continue their antics at a safe distance while the elders sizzle steaks. A camp kitchen provides further catering facilities, and there’s also a launderette and a 24-hour toilet block with baby bathroom.

Local attractions

As one may just guess from the name, the Sapphire Coast is a bit of a stunner. There are some truly gorgeous beaches around here – within a half-hour drive you can be gazing at the rock formations behind Pinnacles Beach, hiking to a secluded cove in Ben Boyd National Park or letting your dog splash in the surf at Bungo Beach. This area is also famed as one of the country’s best places for whale watching. Twofold Bay is one of the deepest natural harbours in the world and therefore a favoured spot for resident and passing whales and dolphins. Wildlife spotting cruises can be taken from Eden harbour, or you can plonk down in a favoured spot to see what you can see from the shoreline. It’s also worth visiting the Eden Killer Whale Museum to learn a bit more about the creatures. Away from the coast, there’s a golf course a couple of minutes away, or some more strenuous activity in the form of hikes in the Egan Peaks or Mount Imlay National Park within an hour. In Kiah, 15 minutes’ drive away, you can join canoe tours to paddle through a wetland forest in search of wallabies, wombats and lots of colourful birds.
