General

  • Farmstead site just outside the south edge of Snowdonia National Park
  • Three miles from Machynlleth and 30 mins' drive from Aberdyfi beach
  • Trees to climb, streams to paddle in and woodlands to explore

If you’re seeking an escape from urban life, Penrhosmawr Holidays, a scenic family-friendly site on a working farmstead three miles from Machynlleth might be just what you need.

Penrhosmawr is a top spot for a return to nature: the site is less than 10 minutes’ drive from the edge of Snowdonia National Park, where you can hike, walk and cycle, have a go at loads of watersports, toss out a line at one of the fishing sites, or try out some more high-octane outdoor activities, like abseiling, canyoning and ziplining.

You won’t be lacking in nature back on site either – the farm has plenty of trees for kids to climb, streams to paddle in and acres of paths and woodlands to wander around. You can take it even further and go foraging for your own wood from the land around the farm for barbecues and campfires...

Busy days are an inevitably at Penrhosmawr, so make sure you’re well fed for your adventuring: start your day with a breakfast pack from the farm, then stay fuelled with supplies from Machynlleth throughout the day. In the evenings, fire up the barbecue or bag a table at one of the restaurants within five minutes of the site.

No flat Tent pitches available, we had to put up tent on a sloppy pitch it was struggle to sleep on a sloop. There were cow poo every where, it was difficult to keep kids safe from stepping on huge shit spots in the 10 inches of grass. Because of this there were too many small flies, bees and creatures.
ONLY one men toilet and two showers for 150 tents. we had to wait in the queue most of the times. Also, the toilets were faraway up the hill, it was struggle to go yourself and small kids to the toilets.
You cannot take your car near the tent due to sloops, it was struggle to bring things from and to the car, tent.
I would never recommend this site to families.

A lovely site with great views and located just a mile out of town, ½ hours’ drive to the beaches at Borth or Aberdovy. I like the freedom to pitch wherever you like. Fires can be used in a fire pit

    Disliked:

. We went August bank holiday weekend so very busy but there seemed to be no restriction of the mount of people there. This in itself was not a problem but the toilet and shower block was wholly inadequate for the amount wishing to use it. One working toilet for the gents and two showers, two toilets and showers for the girls. The drain for the showers in the gents blocked and flooded into the toilet area so you had to wade in.There were a couple of port-a-loose about but I was not brave enough to enter. One sink for washing up. The farmer seemed a nice chap but if he spent more time looking after and improving the facilities than worrying about were people were parking and flogging wood for the fires it would ease the problem

Absolutely fantastic place to stay with family/ friends and young ...08/28/2019

Absolutely fantastic place to stay with family/ friends and young children, we stayed in a non electric tent 2 adults 3 children and a dog 6,8,13 we was allowed to pitch anywhere within reason farmer had given us some good pointers as best places to pitch, ended up pitching right near the stream with picturesque views of beautiful green hills with sheep, trees and beautiful stars in the night, barbecues and camp fires allowed, great owners whom are very welcoming, they come round on a quad bike in the evening asking if anyone would like a bag of fire would which is currently £5, great hospitality by a lovely family run farm, make sure to bring a frisbee and outdoors activities, kids will love the stream played poo sticks and enjoyed all the simple things that I used to do as a child. A pair of wellies is a must as it is a working farm so occasional sheep poo but not a problem adds to the fun! Toilets are clean although just two for women and two for men one more would be perfect, portaloo added for busy weeks, other tenters did play music into the night sometimes but farmer was great at making sure everyone was happy and content, I think it’s nice that you can have music if you choose. Would definitely recommend this camp site and we will be back again, thank you.

Camping in a field with nice views. Relaxed. Friendly.08/28/2019

As the owner says, it's not really a campsite, but a farm. And that is its charm. It's great to be able to pitch your tent where you like and not have the formal pitches of many sites. Yes, it's mostly slightly inclined, but that didn't seem to be too much of a problem, apart from g&t sliding off the table when you weren't looking! It's probably worth taking something to prop up table legs.

The views were lovely. It was very relaxed. The owner is friendly.

Some past reviews mentioned parking being an issue, but I guess they addressed that because it wasn't!

Don't stress about finding reception and checking in, I don't think there is a reception. You rock up, decide where you want to go and pitch your tent. A welcome relief from campsites with rules plastered everywhere.

    Lots of space around.

Firepit with logs for £10 dropped off by the farmer.

    Disliked:

We went on a bank holiday weekend when there weren't many other options showing in Snowdonia. It was busy. The facilities are not equipped for the number of people that can stay at peak times, with just one men's flushing toilet, and a couple of showers. The facilities were kept clean and stocked though.

Plus we'd pitched our two families next to some lads who were a bit noisy until 1am or so, but no big deal.

For the first two days we made do with the portaloo that was close by. There's a few dotted about on bank holidays. It was fine the first day, but overused and a bit stinky by the second. Plus the slamming of the door through the night was irritating.

On the Monday 90% of the campsite up and left, and Monday night was quiet. No more queues for the shower/loo. And this is how it normally is apparently.

In short, it's basic and off-grid. We took a pump-up shower which worked well and I enjoyed the fact that it felt like camping should be. I'd try to avoid a bank holiday weekend again I think, but I imagine next year they'll have a few more portaloos, so expect it would be fine.
