  • Hot tub, kitchen and toiletries provided; food boxes to order
What could be more relaxing than a stay in a luxurious yurt on a Carmarthenshire working farm? With views to the Brecon Beacons, Gilfach Gower Farm hugs the foothills of Betws Mountain near Ammanford. On site, all is geared to relaxation – you don’t even have to bring food along, as barbecue, picnic and breakfast boxes are all available to order when you arrive (for an extra cost), and come brimming with fresh farm produce. The single spacious and luxuriously styled hand-painted Mongolian yurt sits in its own wildflower meadow, enclosed by hedgerows and trees for complete privacy. It can comfortably sleep four – just the job for families – with a king-size bed and two singles (one doubles as a sofa during the day). Upcycled furniture promises high-end comfort, with bedding, blankets, towels and rather posh toiletries provided. You’ll always be warm as the yurt is fully insulated and kept cosy by a handmade woodburning stove (with seasoned wood provided from the farm). Outside, the dining area has a kettle barbecue and firepit, and tucked behind the yurt – away from prying eyes – is a hot tub. On clear nights, grab a glass of fizz, sit back among the bubbles and gaze up at the stars. Still can’t unwind? Unlikely – but if that’s the case, book a yoga lesson to help you along. The yurt is at the top of a sloping field and it’s a short walk (bring appropriate footwear) to the private shower room, fully equipped kitchen and adjacent parking. Travelling without a car? Arrange pick-ups from local train and bus stations in advance.

Liked: Oh my gosh this was a wonderful weekend. A brilliant combination of being able to help out with the animals but also have free time to relax with my family. Myself and my two boys absolutely loved having cuddles with the lambs and helping with the goats. The breakfast pack was also a brilliant buy some fresh farm produce for a delicious fry up. The yurt was lovely and warm (we actually had to open the door for a while in the evening as it was really toasty. We will definitely be back.

Disliked: Leaving!

Liked: Great site, not far from local town but far enough to be secluded. Great accommodation and fantastic host.

Local attractions

While staying at Gilfach Gower Farm, you're welcome to join owner Sarah to meet all the farm residents. On the agenda are hairy Highland cows and calves, sheep (with cute little lambs in spring), pygmy goats and free-range hens – not forgetting the Border collie Midge. If you can lure the kids away from the animals, Carmarthenshire has an abundance of great walks and cycle routes; the Amman Valley River Walk (five minutes’ drive) is definitely worth a try, as is mountain biking in the Brechfa Forest (50 minutes). Too adventurous? Stroll the old drover’s path to the ruins of Penlle’r Castell (Norman Castle) on the slopes of Mynydd y Betws (50 minutes’ walk). Ammanford (five minutes’ drive) is a former coal-mining town full of heritage and charm, with a great selection of restaurants, coffee shops and pubs, as well as some unusual shops in the Victorian Arcade. The pretty market town of Llandeilo (20 minutes) is also packed with visitor attractions and foodie delights, and has masses of arty things going on all year.
