General

  • Farm site with stunning 360-degree views of the Black Mountain
  • A five-minute drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales
  • On the Beacons Way trail in the Brecon Beacons National Park

Room to breathe and a friendly welcome – what more could you ask for from a scenic site like Eco Camping Wales in the Brecon Beacons’ gorgeous Glyntawe valley?

Well, 360-degree views of the spectacular Black Mountain for starters. The environmentally friendly modus operandi is another big bonus – the site channels cold mountain spring water into its hand-washing basins, for example (not for drinking) – as is the back-to-nature feel (there are no concrete hardstandings or electric hook-ups here, ta).

This Glamorgan site encourages open-fire cooking across most of the grounds (on the firepits or while using your own raised reusable barbecues) and phone reception is limited – so you can gleefully tell work they won’t be able to get in touch.

Try to get as much time out of the office as you can to take on all the nearby treks; the owners particularly recommend roaming to Llyn y Fan Fawr lake (an hour) on the long-distance Beacons Way trail that passes the park. Wander to one of the pubs a few minutes from the site too or grab grub from Ystradgynlais’s coffee shops and ingredients from its award-winning butcher (15 minutes).

A few bits and pieces to be aware of if you’re planning on staying here: the showers are coin operated; firewood/kindling is for sale on site; and there’s no commercial waste so please be prepared to take all rubbish home and leave the space as you find it.

Very secluded , sheltered ,Lovely rural site as near to wild camping as you can get without actually camping on the side of a mountain. Well thought out with water to pitch and fire pits also.

    Disliked:

Toilet / shower facilities only one toilet and shower it seemed for whole site. Luckily site was near empty at the time otherwise I can imagine issues when busy. Clean and tidy though very basic. Plenty of hand wash/ gel available.

The location and view from the pitch was excellent! The fire pits were also great.

    Disliked:

The facilities were a little basic and run down. We also didn't feel "Eco" was a fair name as the site does not seem to have implemented environmentally friendly or 'eco' aspects. The check-in was already quite late in the day, and the staff were 45 minutes late and not overly concerned that we had waited (perhaps in the future they could contact guests in advance if they are running later than the stated time).

The pitch sites were all really picturesque and all very apart from one another giving plenty of privacy. The pitches each have a fire pit with firewood on sale for £5 a bag, great for star watching and s'mores!

Jeremy and Caroline are a lovely, welcoming couple. They let us borrow their OS map for our hike down the valley. They also have friendly dogs and cats, one of which joined us for our BBQ and for a fuss.

The toilet and showers are basic but perfectly clean. The shower runs for 4 minutes with a £1 coin and was wonderfully hot!

    Disliked:

A light in the shower area would be handy.

Very nice spots to pitch and not too many other people around. The hosts were very friendly and the bathroom was nicely clean. The hosts made sure the bathroom was also well stocked with hand sanitizer etc.

    Disliked:

Having some guidance about where to bring your trash after your stay would have been nice. there are no bins on-site, so you need to take your recycling to the closest recycling centre.

Local attractions

It would be difficult to land on a better location for stints in south Wales than this one: set in the Brecon Beacons National Park, it’s a five-minute drive from the National Showcaves Centre for Wales and its scenic surrounds.

Head to Henrhyd Falls (15 minutes) to walk behind the wall of water; you might recognise this spot from several films, including Batman. The Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary is nearby as well, so drop in to see the primates before meeting the meerkats at Pen-y-Cae’s microzoo (five minutes).

Wanting more waterfalls? There are three to see while wending your way along a walking loop near Pontneddfechan (15 minutes), a popular part of the national park for pottering about.

Fan of fishing? Get the rod out at the River Tawe or by the Crai Reservoir (10 minutes). You could also angle down by the sea at the Gower’s gorgeous beaches near Swansea (an hour).

Must see

  • National Showcaves of Wales (1.0 miles)
