Cae Glas Camping: View from the bell tent

General

  • Peaceful site in the Brecon Beacons, five minutes from Abercraf
  • A five-minute drive to the National Showcaves; 45 mins to Pen y Fan
  • Gorgeous mountain views on site; pony treks and waterfalls close by

So quiet you can hear the owls hooting after dark – sound like the kind of place for you? Then get along to Glamorgan and Cae Glas Camping, in the Brecon Beacons National Park and five minutes’ drive from the village of Abercraf.

That blissful peace and quiet is the reason most guests cite for choosing a stay here – and as such you’ll be asked to keep the noise down, particularly after dark, to ensure a sense of calm for both visitors and wildlife.

To further boost that peaceful vibe facilities have been kept to a minimum, but all guests will have access to toilets, showers and a washing-up area and are welcome to bring along dogs and barbecues. There's a firepit area here too, and firewood can be purchased on site.

There are some stunning mountain views to be had here, and sitting down to admire them for a while is a most rewarding option. That said, there’s plenty of activity nearby should you wish: this is waterfall walk country, and a riding centre just down the road that can sort pony treks for all the family. It’s also a short drive to get to places like Craig y Nos Castle and the National Showcaves Centre for Wales or a slightly longer one (about 45 minutes) to Pen y Fan, the National Botanic Garden of Wales and the beaches of the Gower Peninsula.

Spectacular scenery and considering how hilly the area is the pitches were very flat. The hosts were friendly and offered to make hot sarnies for Sunday breakfast. The site is near to many beautiful cycling and yomping routes and within driving distance there are a big selection of less challenging venues and walks

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike but just to make you aware that the access is via a very short very steep lane

Lovely campsite, perfect for those interested in a secluded, peaceful stay. The views are absolutely stunning; the campsite is on the side of a hill and you have sweeping views down to the other side of the valley. We were in a VW campervan and one tent which was fine. The campsite is a field on a lovely working farm, and is small scale which we really liked. The owner was really welcoming, and there's an option for hot breakfasts brought to your tent some mornings; there's a communal firepit you can use and very good value wood that they sell for £3 per generous bag (enough for an evening), with one refill per day included. The owner also runs a rather gorgeous honey business, and you can buy soap and other things that they've made from the wax. There's a waterfalls walk within a 15 minute drive that is highly recommended. Good to know is that parts of the field are on a gentle slope (as expected in a valley!) but this wasn't an issue for us; also there is one toilet/ shower which there was a bit of a queue at certain times but not particularly an issue. Definitely recommend Cae Glas as somewhere to stay, looking forward to going back some day!

Beautiful views and friendly owners! Shower/ toilet block the cleanest I have ever seen for a campsite!

    Disliked:

There is only one toilet/ shower so on busy times there was queue. Especially if someone was showering and you just wanted a number 1 it was a little bit frustrating. Unable to have a fire right by your tent and sometimes the fire pit was in use so was a little chilliy.

From the manager...

Thanks for you lovely review, we have taken you comments on board and are going to be allowing fire pits next to tents providing they are on a stand, or we will also hire them out.
Hope to see you all again.

Local attractions

Once you’ve dragged yourselves away from the views on site, it’s time to explore the surrounding area. Start close by with a horseback trek from the local stables (five minutes’ drive) or a walk to Henrhyd Falls (10 minutes). The National Showcaves Centre for Wales (five minutes) is a fab place to visit on any day, but makes a particularly good option for a wet-weather day out.

If the nippers need a little break from all the scenery admiring, perhaps they’d appreciate a visit to meet the cheeky residents of Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary (10 minutes). And if the grownups need a treat to spur them along to the end of a hike, maybe a little something from the whisky and gin selections at Penderyn Distillery (25 minutes)?

A bit further afield there’s plenty to explore around the Brecon Beacons National Park, including the splendid Four Falls Walk (half an hour) and the uphill challenge of Pen y Fan (45 minutes), the tallest British peak south of Snowdonia. The National Botanic Garden of Wales and Mumbles beach are both 45 minutes away if you’re after something a little less energetic.

Must see

  • National Showcaves of Wales (0.8 miles)
  • Penderyn Distillery Visitor Centre (8.1 miles)
