  • Family-sized bell tents in a three-acre field in Llwyngwril
  • A 10-minute drive to Fairbourne or Tywyn beaches; 30 mins to Barmouth
  • Sea views on site; pub, beach and train station a short walk away
It’s a special spot indeed where you can watch the sun rise over the mountains in the morning, then settle down to see it sink into the sea at the end of the day… And that spot is exactly what’s on offer at Pentre Bach Holiday Cottages. This lovely little glamping site is in a three-acre field in the little Gwynedd village of Llwyngwril, a very short walk from the village shop, pub and train station. If you’re after some space to relax, this could well be it: it’s got sea views (with the beach a short stroll away), a stream gurgling away in the background and chickens to say hello to as you wander around. There’s plenty of space for the kids to run about too, and things like tyre swings for them to play on. Having a train station up the road is a very handy thing for those planning a holiday based around public transport – services from here will whisk you off to beaches like Barmouth and Tywyn, inland to places like Machynlleth or for day trips to castles in Harlech and Criccieth. You’ll be at the southern tip of the Snowdonia National Park here too, so all sorts of activities are around including waterfall hikes, horse riding, mountain climbing and mountain biking. Back at base, you’ll be staying in smart and spacious bell tents with proper beds (please bring your own bedding) and colourful rag rugs on the floor. Each one has a table and chairs, a charcoal barbecue and access to a toilet, and (from 8am to 9pm); you’ll also have access to a communal area with shower, wifi and power for charging your gadgets.

Liked: Very welcoming, checked to see if we were ok. Portable toilets close to pitches. Enjoyed stay.

Disliked: Just 1 shower but it’s newly opened and wasn’t really an issue.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site is a lovely family Frieda site, wonderful views and a generally flat field. Plenty to keep my little ones busy. They loved seeing the chickens roaming around, tyre swings and playing in the tiny stream as well as the football goals and odd visit to the games room (more suited for older kids and teens).

The facilities were ok. Plus the site in only a very short drive from some lovely days out. I’d stay here again.

The hosts were friendly enough, we saw each of them once throughout our stay when they Introduced themselves.

Disliked: We arrived on a Friday afternoon and left on a Tuesday, in this time the three portaloos on the field weren’t cleaned, wiped down or sanitised, we’ve been to cheaper sites with even less facilities and at a minimum these were santitised twice a day.

Although I’m not too bothered about walking to get water and doing the washing up at our tent, many of our neighbouring tents mentioned the lack of wash place a bit of a nuisance.

We traveled with our parents and had some minor issues with the owners dog (mostly freindly) barking and growling when we tried to move her out of our tent. This was on occasion quite upsetting to our parents dog who was kept on his leash when their dog was on the field alone. She does like to Hoover up whatever she could find, which again, isn’t to everyone’s liking.

From the manager: Hi, thankyou for your review. I'm glad your family enjoyed it here, and the aspects of the field. The portaloos should have been fully serviced on the Saturday. This is the first I've heard that they weren't. My apologies, I will follow this up with the toilet provider. Also, apologies for our dog, especially to your parents dog. I wish you'd mentioned during your stay and we'd have made a point of tying her up to keep her in. Unfortunately with all the campers on the field she's taken to finding any opportunity to sneak out -be it via windows, behind our backs as we go out doors etc -she likes to approach people with a ball and is mostly rewarded by guests thinking she's wonderful and throwing it for her. A huge challenge to train out of her when she's being so well rewarded for her misbehaviour. Interesting to hear about her hoovering up stuff, that's new to me, normally, as long as she has a ball or people giving her attention food is mostly ignored. I'm also surprised about the barking, I've only ever heard her bark at sounds she can't see, and she's very quick to put on a doleful, "woe is me" look as she slinks away if you simply tell her "out" or "bed", for anyone we've encountered so far. Growling is her reaction to a perceived threat to her possession of a ball. We will work on a solution for next year as I, for one don't want to have to be consistently worrying about her whereabouts, and I certainly don't want her bothering guests. I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer holiday.

Y Gorsaf Mynydd bell tent (six person)

Liked: Location, nice view.

Disliked: Dirty toilet and shower. Game room with broken equipment and dirty fridge. Switching the lights off to unable to use the toilet. Rude and swearing person on the field. No washing up area. Portable loo to close to tents. Not seen owner for once.

From the manager: This is our first year having camping and we're learning a lot about the unexpected things campers do, for example, a member of your party thinking it was OK to do donuts in their car in the middle of a field of tents, children, dogs and chickens. To address your points: Dirty toilet and shower: I have unfortunately been cleaning faeces and blood off the toilet and other parts of the bathroom regularly. It is not realistic to hover, waiting to check the bathroom after every user so there will have been times between the offenders and my checks. Fortunately the child responsible for the faeces has now left. My apologies if you were unfortunate enough to experience the shower area after this child. Games room: At the start of the summer holidays there were 15 brand new darts, 6 pool cues and 2 sets of balls for the pool table, beautiful fairy lights, a drum kit set up for me by a local drummer and a Tardis. The fairy lights have been ripped apart, the drum kit has changed shape, there isn't a single complete dart, an entire set of pool balls has disappeared and several pool cues have been snapped. I hope you can understand my unwillingness to replace all these items until camping has finished. Dirty Fridge: This is a benefit for campers. It is being cleaned regularly but not daily. You arrived on Thursday, it was cleaned on Friday -did you only look at it the once? Switching lights off: The shower (with the additional benefit of an extra toilet) is advertised as 8am-9pm. We've not actually locked the door to stop access outside of these hours so it has been available 24 hours so far. We have experienced door slamming, and drunken arguments in the foyer at night though which wake us and our dog up. Having sensor lights in the bathroom, which were present and functioning during your stay, means the facilities are still usable outside of the advertised hours but seems to dissuade the hanging around and noise during the night. There were also 4 portaloos in the field available for use. Rude/swearing people: People are autonomous. If another camper chooses to swear or be rude to other campers, it's on them. We don't know the content of conversations between campers unless anything is fed back to us. No washing up area: None was advertised. I would love to add one, and also extra showers, but first I need to work out how to get a water and accompanying drainage to a suitable spot. Portable loo too close to tents: In part this is a personal issue. We've had people camp in front of the portaloos by choice. There is one portaloo between the 2 bell tents so guests in these don't have to walk up the field in the night to use one. From other feedback, this is something I would repeat. Not seen owner: I personally greeted some of your party when they arrived and directed them down the field to your bell tent. The members of your party doing donuts in our field also came across my husband when he told them to stop.

Liked: Lovely hosts

Disliked: Chemical toilets

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou. I'm totally with you on chemical toilets but unfortunately without a water supply and accompanying drainage it's the only short term way to supply toilets for campers. I am looking at composting toilets but being within the bounds of Snowdonia National Park planning for permanent structures can be a little challenging. There is a normal flushing toilet with a sink in with the shower area.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site was only very small but was close enough to the main house to access the shower/toilet. Portaloo toilets also available.
The children loved playing in the field on the tyre swings and trampoline and particularly seeing the chickens.

Disliked: The entrance to the field became very muddy due to the rain and was hard to get the cars on and off.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your review. I'm so glad the children had a lovely time. We're very aware of the entrance to the field, unfortunately it's been exceptionally & continually wet this year which has caused the issue. We've added a lot of gravel to the muddy area to help grip in the short term & are talking about turning that section into a fully gravelled area for next year to prevent reoccurrence. 💛
