General

  • Peaceful site on an organic farm 10 minutes' drive from Llanidloes
  • Half an hour's drive from walks in Elan Valley and Hafren Forest
  • Home-reared meat available on site; eco-friendly facilities

Old Chapel Farm is a spacious Powys site in a secluded valley, 1000 feet above sea level and about 10 minutes’ drive from Llanidloes. It’s described by the owners as ‘a peaceful haven for people and wildlife on an organic farm’ and they’ve pretty much nailed the essence of the place there.

The aim is for the owners to live off the land – and to that end, this is a place where you’ll be surrounded by Jersey cows, a flock of sheep, a poultry collection, bees and extensive veg gardens, along with woodlands and alternative energy supplies (plus some friendly retrievers who love having kids around). And you can share in some of that bounty too, as there’s home-reared beef and lamb available on site for barbecuing.

It’s all very friendly but they’d just like to offer a small word of caution: this isn’t a site for those seeking proper luxury, as the very nature of the place means you’re likely to encounter such things as sheep droppings here and there…

Facilities on site include a solar-heated shower, a firepit, an awning to cook under and compost loos.

The staff (owners) were super accommodating and friendly, I travelled as a lone cyclist and Fran made sure I was as comfortable as possible as it was going to be a cold night. Really enjoyed my stay here and wish them all the best.

Everything! Loved the ethos of the farm. We had a tour of the farm with Fran and found it really interesting.
Beautiful scenery and a real back to basics stay which we loved.
Thank you. Would definitely go back again.

    Disliked:

Nothing, the only thing we found difficult was finding it, as it was dark when we arrived and it wasn't very well signed. However it does say in the instructions that it is preferable to arrive in the daylight, so it was our fault for arriving so late!

I received a warm welcome from Fran and Kevin. My shepherds hut was amazing,
all the home comforts I needed for a short break. The isolation appealed to me as social distancing is/was a priority. The setting was beautiful - quiet and peaceful but still not far from local amenities. I wouldn't hesitate in staying again.

We loved the isolated location, extremely peaceful with beautiful views to enjoy, the fire pit was perfect both for toasting marshmallows & keeping warm while enjoying the stunning starry night. The yurt was basic but fine for what we were expecting & needed & with the additional trampoline the kids didn’t want to leave! We had great weather which made our night away really enjoyable. The hosts & their animals were really friendly too & Fran was always available to help whenever needed.

Ideal place to spend a socially distanced August bank holiday weekend! Only one van allowed in the field due to slope, and placed well away from the few tents or yurts (when open). Bit of a walk to the facilities, but all part of the charm.
Very much out of the way location, but a special place to unwind in. Friendly, laid-back owners who told us which was their land for us to walk around, and told us to help ourselves to any surplus herbs or veg in poly tunnel.
The walk up Old Chapel Hill is steep, but worthwhile as you get panoramic views of most of mid-Wales.

    Disliked:

Quite expensive for the facilities you get, but incomparable to the other normal sites we stayed at on our fortnight in Wales. Will be the place we remember the longest because it is so different and peaceful.
Narrow dead end road leading to site, and steep track down to the farm wouldn't suit big motorhomes. Not therefore suitable for touring around, but really a place just to
relax and take in the atmosphere.
Limited options for walking locally as signs are so poor. The owners seem to be the only landowners who maintain their path signs, so not their fault. However, if you do wander off course onto private land, the locals are happy to put you right.
