  • Peaceful and luxurious accommodation in the grounds of Culdees Castle
  • Five minutes' drive from Muthill; 15 minutes from Gleneagles
  • Secluded woodland location with a hot tub, firepit and castle views
Feeling fancy? Then swoop down for a stay at Culdees Castle Estate, a luxurious Scottish site that'll make you feel like a monarch of the glen. The plush accommodation here is set in a secluded forest in the grounds of Culdees Castle, Perthshire. As well as comfort, there's a fair bit of history in the air on the estate – many moons ago this land was gifted to the clan Drummond as a reward for fighting alongside Robert the Bruce… By day, you can admire vistas over this attractive aristo estate and into the Highlands beyond, while at night the illuminated castle makes quite the backdrop as you huddle around your private firepit or barbecue for warmth. There's also a hot tub that's lit up after dark, plus loads of outdoor furniture where you can get cosy and keep an eye out for the wild deer that roam the estate during twilight hours. The accommodation is smart, modern and tastefully furnished, with facilities including a bright washroom, a well-equipped kitchen area and free wifi. Its wooden cladding and interiors blend in seamlessly with the rest of the estate, which has plenty of secluded tree-lined corners where you can take generous gulps of fresh woodland air. Culdees Castle Estate is five minutes' drive from Muthill, an attractive village with a restaurant, pub, ancient church and small golf course. Looking for larger links? Gleneagles is a mere 15-minute drive down the A823.

Spiers Lodge cabin

Liked: We absolutely loved the feel of the cabins and how homely it felt. There was everything that you needed in there for the couple of days we were there. Hot tubs were set up for us and they stayed hot the whole time we used it. Rob and Tracy were really good hosts and very friendly. Beautiful surroundings and so peaceful.

Drummond Lodge cabin

Liked: Totally loved our stay in drummond lodge. So peaceful, surrounded by the sounds of nature. The owners were lovely and very helpful. The lodge was just perfect in size for a couple and very well maintained.

Disliked: My only complaint would be personally for us, we would have liked a bit more privacy round the hot tub with the trellis areas. We felt slightly awkward when using bbq as you could view the other lodge and hot tub with trellis being head height.

Local attractions

All kinds of top-tier tourist trips are up for grabs in this part of Perthshire. Dash down to Castle Drummond (10 minutes' drive) if you like your formal gardens to come with courtly castle scenery, or head to Gleneagles (15 minutes) for golf, falconry, off-road driving and shooting pursuits; there are also weatherproof options available, including day access to a gym, swimming pool and spa. To see some less manicured open-air spots, drive out to Loch Earn (30 minutes) to skim stones, hire a kayak or trek up to the St Fillians viewpoint. Lots of animals can be spotted dashing through the countryside here, but if you want more than just a fleeting glance there's also Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre (20 minutes), home to both British and exotic beasts. Urban jaunts next on the agenda? The centre of Perth (30 minutes) has stacks of stuff to keep you occupied, including galleries, museums, gorgeous riverside walks and Scone Palace, where Scotland's kings were once crowned. Stirling (30 minutes), where there are more royal connections, is also worth a peek.
