I am originally from west of Ireland and as a short camping Holiday it is a Hidden gem.
For pet owners it is great you can bring one dog.
Lots to do or just chill and relax over two or three days.
Lots of things to see within an hours driving distance if you want to go farther away.
Pub on site in main building is handy.
Kitchen facial ties good and provided on site cups plates etc so if your a camper lees to pack.

We booked continental breakfast the only option and some of the hot food could have been served hotter this food been self service. In general all food organic and delicious and well presented. Overall a very pleasant experience and I will be recommending to friends and staying again at some stage.

We did not fell welcome more of a inconvenience, as we had to ask for an electric connection on arrival. On phoning prior to going i was aware that we needed a normal plug/ caravan plug but had been told this would be provided. The owner had to borrow one from a neighbour while we waited for an hour for her to return. The neighbour approached us 2 days later requesting we leave this by the wall for him to collect at 8 30 am. Thankfully we were leaving anyway but if we hadn't would we then have had not electric hookup. All the staff appeared to be German with little English.we had no further contact with the owner during our stay.We felt the site was not a proper site as it was also the car park for visiting riders. We appreciate that other people had different experiences having stayed in the cabin or hotel.so perhaps that is what the centre should continue with.

We received a lovely welcome from staff, and throughout our stay found staff to be courteous and friendly, and not intrusive.

The facilities were fabulous, as was the setting, and it was very refreshing to feel free to stroll through the inspirational vegetable gardens, fields, the enchanted forest and a magnificent cross country riding course.

The kids were well entertained by the animals, art room, play area, and most especially the go-karts - fantastic for kids to get to know other children during their stay.

Having access to a shared kitchen, complete with electricity sockets was fantastic too, making it easy to cook, wash dishes and inflate mattresses.

Toilet facilities were in good working order, and were maintained nicely. It was great that showers were free to use, and water was always warm.

Overall, it was well worth it, and provided us with an excellent base from which to explore the region - so much so that we extended our stay!

    Disliked:

The shared bathroom toilet was slightly off-putting, and for those who desire more privacy it would be better if the disabled toilet had a functioning lock.

    - Good for young children as there is a nice play area, a craft area, lots of animals and a fairy walk
    - Dog friendly
    - Relaxed atmosphere
    - Friendly staff
    - Showers and toilets were always clean with warm water, there were free to use too!

    Disliked:

    - Restaurant had limited options, couldn't buy milk or snack foods like chips for the kid's
    - Kitchen was small with a small fridge and no freezer. One family was staying for over a week and they took over the kitchen area. No room in fridge, stuff all over the kitchen etc. Not the staffs fault but we felt a bit pushed out.

    Disliked:

Too far out from loughrea it said 20 minutes more like 40 minutes drive and 2 hours walk. Campsite was terrible when we seen pictures online it looked fabulous we were really excited to stay here but when we arrived the lady said we would be staying in the orchard which sounds beautiful but in reality it is where they grow the fruit and veg which isn’t very nice especially when horse poo is right next to you. There was a beautiful space for us to set up camp but they would not let us as they said it was full which is fair enough but they should not have let us book if we were going to be a garden with bumpy ground and apples all over the floor and falling on our tent all night. During the night an animal also ripped our tent.Facilities were very poor standards. Food was very expensive for what we got. It was supposed to be all you can eat but we were told how much of meat we could have which was one piece and everything else had mint in it. Not very nice. We booked for 3 nights and only stayed for 1 night. When we confronted the lady about how bad our experience was she was very rude and told us to pack up our tent and leave so we did. We asked about a refund and she was very angry and unpleasant towards us. Also all staff were foreign and could not understand us. Please if you are staying here looking into it properly because pictures can be deceiving. Very bad experience.

From the manager...

If you put our GPS coordinates in Google Maps, we are exactly 11 km from Loughrea. This is a 15 minute drive for our staff.

We have lovely fields to pitch a tent and offered the Orchard (beside the tipi) to this couple as we had several large family groups camping that weekend and thought they might prefer the peace and solitude from all the children and families. Never did they tell us that this was not the case. If this had been told to us we would have been happy to let you pitch your tent in the field with all the families.

We have excellent reviews on our food and facilities, and all of our front of house speak are native English speakers - we do have some foreign staff in the stables.

If you had asked for a refund and removed your tent after one night we would have given it to you. But the tent was left pitched for 3 nights on the property.

We did not like this in any way and felt they were misrepresenting their facilities in their advertising.

    Disliked:

This is not as described. When we arrived they told us we should pitch our caravan and awning in the car park. This was being ' mucked out as we arrived as it was covered in horse poo. They seriously thought it was acceptable to rent this as a pitch at nearly €400.00 for 7 nights. The site is not as described on their website and I can not recommend it at all. They need to ammend their advertising as it is truly a misrepresentation.

From the manager...

We will no longer be accommodating caravans. As this family stayed on the property for less than 5 minutes, it seems unlikely to us that they would have any idea about the activities and/or facilities offered or be in any position to rate the overall experience, restaurant, or customer service.

It was a lovely, quiet trip. The site is small and friendly with a good equestrian centre at its heart.
The campers kitchen was fully equipped (could've left our great at home!) and clean.
Playground is small but good, games and library for kids to use were great, as was the arts and crafts room where the kids had great fun getting creative. Not to mention the fairy woods were charming too. On horse back and on foot.

Local attractions

Whether your tastes are active or placid, there's plenty to do around Slieve Aughty Centre, including countryside strolls, cycling, birdwatching, sightseeing, riding, golfing and fishing.

Have a walk around the local forest and countryside using one of the centre's detailed maps or recommendations; donkey and pony hire is available if you're here with kids. Another good walk in the area is around Lough Rea, where the Walkway trail covers around 15 acres of wild wetland and meadow for birdwatching.

A playground and picnic area is at the adjoining Fair Green; if you're around in summer, Lough Rea lake beach is a popular spot for families who come to swim, walk and fish for trout. The beach has changing and shower rooms, parking and picnic areas, and is lifeguarded in summer.

Portumna Forest Park is another excellent walking locale, accessible from Portumna Castle and with buggy-friendly pathways. Native tree species are labelled along the first part of the walk, and the scenic shores of Lough Derg a little further along. Portumna Harbour, just beside the forest park, is a popular place for picnics and watching boats and swans.

This is also prime cycling country: ask the Slieve Aughty team for recommendations on easy surfaced roads or more challenging mud and stone paths in the forest. Bike hire can be arranged if you haven't brought your own wheels.

Finally, have a day or two among the sightseeing, shopping, beaches and nightlife of Galway city, finishing off with fresh mussels and a Guinness in Eyre Square.
