  • Smart glamping accommodation on a Wiltshire alpaca farm
  • Two miles from Melksham; Corsham 10 minutes' drive
  • Eco-friendly site with six-metre tents on a four-acre paddock
Exotic animals and calm country scenery? If you're minded to say 'yes' to that tempting combination, take a look at Lacock Alpaca Glamping, a well-kept site two miles outside of Melksham in Wiltshire. The site is mostly given over to the alpacas that graze in neighbouring meadows, but one of the farm's four-acre fields has a handful of smart bell tents for stays close to all the animal action. The well-equipped accommodation units come with a fully made-up double bed and two single futons, meaning each one can comfortably sleep a party of up to four. There's also a logburning stove to keep you toasty on cooler nights, a private composting toilet for each tent and two shared gas-fired showers. Outside, you can relax in the deck chairs or on the picnic benches provided and use the firepit or gas stove to cook up something good. Pots, pans, crockery, cutlery and glasses are all included, along with a coolbox for keeping your ingredients fresh. This site has an eco-friendly ethos, so you'll be provided with environmentally sound products and have access to proper recycling facilities. (It's also involved in a long-term tree-planting and land-regeneration project.) During your stay you’ll be welcome to tour the farm, meet the herd and learn more about how the owners care for their gorgeous livestock.

Local attractions

It's an easy five-minute drive into Melksham, an attractive market town where you can head to the shops, pick up snacks or book a table for a special evening out. From there, it's an easy trip to Lacock Abbey (five minutes' drive), a National Trust-managed property with roots dating back to the early 13th century, or to the Kennet and Avon Canal (five minutes) for relaxing bike rides and walks along the water's edge. Next, you might like to head to nearby well-preserved towns and villages like Corsham (10 minutes), Bradford-on-Avon (15 minutes) or Castle Combe on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes), all of which make great starting points for rural rambles through the lush Wiltshire countryside. History buffs, meanwhile, need only look to Avebury's spectacular stone circle and associated prehistoric sites (25 minutes), with more to discover in the bevy of museums in Bath (30 minutes) and Bristol (45 minutes) too. Just in case you haven't had your fill of cute exotic creatures, the latter also has a zoo with gorillas, seals, penguins and reptiles galore.
