Be Wilder Camps: Safari bell tents

General

  • Family-friendly stays on a small rare breeds farm park
  • A 10-minute drive from Nunney Castle or 15 minutes from Frome
  • Tailored area-specific courses and activities (extra charges apply)

'Rewilding for the soul' is how the owners of Be Wilder Camps sum up their place – an idea that makes a lot of sense in this secluded part of rural Somerset. Spending time in nature and kicking back among greenery is, after all, a very relaxing and rewarding way to spend a holiday, and this family-friendly option is a top place to have a few days dedicated to doing just that.

The site is just down the road from the tiny village of Wanstrow, close to the edge of the Mendip Hills. It's easy to get out to a range of tried-and-tested Somerset attractions like Nunney Castle (10 minutes' drive), Bruton (10 minutes) and Frome (15 minutes), but Be Wilder Camps also organises a range of outdoor courses and activities (like bushcraft, a daily forest school and yoga) that are sure to help you see the local area in a new light, as well as evening fireside food sessions on some nights.

Be Wilder Camps is located on a small rare breeds farm park where you can visit all sorts of animals, so the owners know a thing or two about looking after the land. You'll be staying in their hilltop field, where there are truly outstanding views over the local countryside – the woodland that flanks a side of the pitching area adds an extra touch of wild vibes to the place and is a great spot to spy on visiting animals and birds.

As well as its essential facilities, the site has a coffee van serving hot drinks and pastries and an on-site shop where you can pick up firewood or barbecue coals.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Entertainment and activities are available between 07/16 and 08/31.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Great location, quiet. Tent was clean. The glamping kitchen was a lovely surprise and very useful

    Disliked:

Toilets weren’t particularly clean and the glamping kitchen had loads of wasps flying round. Dangerous for young children. Aside from that, we had originally booked for 2 nights but only ended up staying the 1 night. We emailed them to see whether we could get a refund for the one night but to date never received a response. Fine if not possible but I would have appreciated final confirmation so I don’t rate their customer service.

Friendly staff on site. Facilities were regularly cleaned.

    Disliked:

The fact that some of the visitors couldn't clear their own rubbish away when they packed up to leave the site. Hot water could be a bit temperamental from time to time but found if you switched off the tap and tried again, the boiler would then kick in.

  • Liked:

Lovely location and atmosphere. Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. Site seemed really well established and put together even though I gather it’s relatively new. The interior of the tent was amazing and had everything and more in terms of what we needed. It was lovely to have breakfast on site in Gabriella’s tent, it was good to just sit and chat to him as well.

    Disliked:

One morning the showers were cold but I didn’t mind this too much to be honest.
The car parking area was a bit muddy which made me a bit nervous of cars getting stuck. Couldn’t seem to connect to said WiFi?

All amenities present: hot water for shower and wash up, kitchen with fridge and gas hobs and 2 types of loos, the compost one we loved! Story time for little ones in the evenings and some days on site food cooked by an amazing Italian chef!

    Disliked:

The other loo, flushable, was smelling quite strongly and was tiny, so we preferred the compost loos.

    The idea and activities offered.

    Disliked:

The rough access to the site, we have a very low car.

Our three requirements when booking a site are that there are onsite toilets, showers and parking by the pitch, we booked through booking.com who sited all these, we were very disappointed on arrival to find out that parking by the pitch wasn't allowed, a resolution was given but this mean't we had to be close to very noisy, swearing campers, instead of a further away position.
