Bluebell Meadow Campsite: Grassy pitches

General

  • Peaceful family-run site in Dorset 10 minutes’ drive from Poole
  • A 20-minute drive from the Jurassic coast; 40 minutes from New Forest
  • Pub within walking distance; more places to eat in the local village

From paddling along Poole harbour on a paddleboard to touring the Jurassic coast, there’s much to muck into from Bluebell Meadow Campsite. The peaceful place is 10 minutes’ drive from Poole and 20 minutes from the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (home to the chalk Old Harry Rocks, half an hour’s drive, if that’s top of your list). So, you’ll be well-based to jam-pack your hiatus full of activities on Dorset’s beaches or the surrounding countryside.

Touch down in the pocket of farmland surrounded by trees… this family-run site has been set up by avid campers and therefore, attention has been paid to the clean facilities. There are plenty of friendly faces around to point you in the direction of the golf course, 20 minutes’ walk away, or cycling and hiking ways throughout the countryside.

Perhaps you might be thinking of visiting the New Forest National Park (40 minutes’ drive) for its trails, gardens, museums and wildlife… the Isle of Purbeck (25 minutes’ drive) for its coastal scenery, wetlands, forestry and farmlands… the scenic Arne (25 minutes) at the northern end of the isle… or Poole Harbour (25 minutes’ drive) for its canoeing, kitesurfing and paddleboarding activities.

As for those of you after some good pub grub, there are several in Lytchett Minster and Upton (five minutes’ drive for a rather pretty village with a minster), with the closest a 25-minute walk away. And for a tasty treat or two, there’s also a popular café five minutes’ drive away.

Bluebell meadow was our first camp with young children & to say we were impressed is an understatement! Lee the owner went above & beyond to ensure we had the best stay possible & were able to easily access the facilities which were exceptional standard. He also extended his level of service by giving us information about the surrounding areas & where to visit with directions. The children & dog were made to feel more than welcome which is more than you can say for some sites & could safely run around with it being gated securely - the dog was kept on a stake with a line to run. The care taken of the campsite is second to none & it’s immaculate! We left the campsite overly impressed & went on to make a further 2 bookings! We very much look forward to our next camp here where we are confident we will receive the same service.

    Disliked:

The absolute only thing I could fault which is not by any means fault of the owner or the campsite itself is that the postcode drops you in the main part of the village which is about a five minute drive up the road from the campsite but we were able to phone the owner & he gave us exact directions from the point in which the satnav dropped us.

From the manager...

Thank you for such a lovely and positive review, it will be great to see you again.

The post code situation is a pain, but if you can use the 'What3words' app and put in according.speedily.urgent this should bring you straight to the campsite gates.

Thanks again and see you soon.

Thanks for the positive comments and for your suggestions for improving the site. We are looking into building a dog walking area, but we are just at the planning stage at the moment. Hope to see again soon.

From the manager...

Thank you for your positive comments.

Regarding the hardstanding this has now been crushed down further using a heavy roller, unfortunately as you arrived in April we had not had chance to get the contractors in to complete this job.

Hopefully when we see you again you will notice the difference.

Good clean facilities, easily accessible, no wait times as site wasn’t busy, safe site with locked gate, ample pitch size, clean site

    Disliked:

Road noise obviously can’t be helped, initial phone call worried us as we didn’t realise we had to be on site before 6pm (we should have called sorry!) but felt on edge to begin with but eased quickly once we settled in.

From the manager...

Thanks for the comments and we are sorry that you would not be returning.

The rules that are set out on Pitchup and our website are made clear upon your arrival, so none of these should have come as a shock or set you on edge. As a courtesy, we call all those who have not arrived by 6.00pm to make sure they are Ok, but again it clearly states on Pitchup what time you need to arrive as the site does not have a reception.

This is a simple, quiet site with marked out pitches in an open field space with trees around the outside. Great location close to main towns. Easy to get about by car with links to main roads close by. Bit of traffic noise but didn't stop us sleeping at all. Hot, electric showers, clean toilets and washing up facilities were all great. Owner was very nice, chatty and approachable. We would definitely stay again.

Friendly welcome, clean and tidy facilities, safe and secure. Loved hearing the many birds singing in the mornings.

    Disliked:

Minor point, but whilst showers had potential to be great, they were let down by cheap shower heads. Some road noise as close to main road.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments and we are glad you enjoyed your stay.

With regards to the showers, we explained when you arrived that we are in a low water pressure area and that the showers were electric and not power showers. So changing the the shower heads would not improve the flow and as the showers heads are triton, they are no means cheap.

Local attractions

Beaches, wildlife havens or historical sites first? There are bucket loads of the former, from Bournemouth’s pier and sandy seafront (half an hour’s drive), the three miles of soft sand from South Haven Point to Old Harry Rocks at Studland beach (half an hour) to the shell-shaped Lulworth Cove (half an hour), formed over millions of years … hence the many swimming spots.

You’ll get history and the coast in one shot in Swanage (half an hour), a Victorian seaside resort, and Weymouth (40 minutes) too, thanks to its Georgian seafront. History-wise, there’s also the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy (15 minutes), Corfe Castle (15 minutes), literary Dorchester (25 minutes) or the heritage Poole Cockle Trail (10 minutes) around the old town.

As for that wildlife spotting, well, top spots include RSPB Arne’s nature reserve (20 minutes), Monkey World’s ape rescue centre (15 minutes) and Brownsea Island (15 minutes’ drive and 35 minutes’ boat ride). There’s a nature reserve (along with beaches and harbour) in Christchurch (35 minutes) too or Upton Country Park (five minutes) for woodlands.

To round things off, perhaps you’ll want to fit in Farmer Palmer's Farm Park (10 minutes’ walk), Splashdown's waterpark (15 minutes) too.
