Clayford Field: Lots of space to relax

General

  • Back-to-basics rural site 10 minutes' drive from Ferndown
  • Just off the 17-mile Castleman Trailway for walks and bike rides
  • A 10-minute walk from a country pub and Chinese restaurant

Walkies time… whether you’ve brought a dog pal along or not, Clayford Field is a cracking spot for those who like a bit of rural roaming on foot.

This simple Dorset site is surrounded by places to get out and stretch your legs: it’s reached via two miles of gravel bridleway and encircled by the woods and fields of the Holt Heath National Nature Reserve, Uddens Park and Ferndown Forest, and a 10-minute toddle from the nearest pub and Chinese restaurant (perhaps the most rewarding walk of all?). Ferndown and Wimborne Minster are both about 10 minutes’ drive away for urban bits like supermarkets and restaurants.

Cycling types and more energetic walkers can head straight out onto the Castleman Trailway, a 17-mile stretch of disused railway line that leads all the way to Poole or the New Forest depending on which way you angle your sights. Golf, fishing and watersports are also nearby, and it’s half an hour's drive to the coast for beach days.

Free spirits will be in their element here, as this is a place where you can pick your own pitch, to have as much space and shade as you like in the secluded six-acre field. There’s plenty of space for games, and access to basic facilities in the form of a toilet, shower and fresh water standpipe.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 3 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This is a quiet park: no music is allowed.

Super place, except the owner cleaned the facilities at 8-9am when everyone was using them every morning! She should have left it until 10.30am like every other campsite in Britain!

    Disliked:

Having neighbours who were allowed to play outrageously loud music until 1.30am allthough they were asked to stop at 10pm!
They got very drunk, swore & shouted sentences like ‘LAST MAN STANDING’ and tok one of my stickers off my bike! I was too scared to complain they parked 1 foot away from me. My wifi went off on second evening early.

Fantastic Site with basic facilities. Very close to some lovely walks and countryside views. We really enjoyed our stay. We even saw a shooting star.

    Disliked:

The road in to the site was slightly rocky but in our SUV it wasn’t too bad. After the second day we found an alternative route in and out of the Site which was less bumpy

basic clean level field, three toilets per block (female & male) with one shower in each and one additional shower. The field is gated (you will get a code). The ad says no fires but people had them on the go, not a problem for us. We would have brought our own pit if we had known. Bumpy skinny lane in to the farm. Nothing around other than farmland.

You conveniently get text a gate code for entry and exit so can arrive when you want really. Small toilet/shower block (seems to be only one shower in mens and womens toilet block and one separate - 3 total). Outdated but clean. Bins including all types of recycling near toilets. The owners were up early cleaning bathrooms and collecting rubbish. When we stayed the field was fully booked but not at all overcrowded. Plenty of space per pitch. Kids and animals running around free and happy. The advertisement does state no fires however a number of pitches had their own fire pits and fires in the evening. It didn't seem to be a problem. All in all this is a basic, level, gated field with a toilet and shower room.

Easy access to the cycle paths. Local shops, pubs within walking distance. Very quiet site great for star gazing and bat watching. Toilets and showers cleaned regularly and very friendly staff. Lots of woods to explore right on the doorstep.

Non contact sign in was smooth and easy.

Will be visiting again to explore some more.

    Disliked:

Didnt dislike but be prepared for an uneven road into the site. It was being improved on our stay.

A riding stables is 20 minutes away for those who’d like to hack through the woods, and there’s wakeboarding, kayaking, paddleboarding and a crazy inflatable obstacle course on the lake at New Forest Water Park (25 minutes).

It’s a half-hour drive to the Dorset coast from here – set your sights on Bournemouth or Sandbanks for a sweep of sandy beaches , or head to Poole for boat trips to the nature reserve on Brownsea Island.

Treating the kids to a day out? Let them pick from Farmer Palmer's Farm Park, the waterslides at Splashdown waterpark, the friendly cartoon characters of Peppa Pig World or animal antics at Monkey World; all are within a 45-minute drive. On a smaller scale (literally) is Wimborne Model Town, 10 minutes away.
