  • Single bell tent in its own splendidly peaceful off-grid farm field
  • Next to popular paragliding spot and the Wessex Ridgeway walking trail
  • On the edge of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
Sit back and savour the seclusion: this site has one singular bell tent, which means that when you book a stay here, you’ve got the whole entire site all to your special little self. Even better still, you’re right on the edge of an area of outstanding natural beauty and surrounded by ruined hill forts and ancient barrows, and right next to the Wessex Ridgeway long distance footpath and a tiptop local paragliding spot on Bell Hill. This is a totally off-grid site (save the mains water supply) that’s been set up with a bell tent and enough bed space for four, the idea being that you don’t need to bring too much hefty camping gear along with your on your hols. Wood can be collected on site for fires and cooking, and a basic outdoor kitchen bar is provided and has been kitted out with all your mealtime necessities. Drinking water is available for collection at a handy standpipe too. The field is plenty spacious for ball games, kite flying and frisbee, and is home to the site’s resident sheep and lambs; it’s also bordered by a splendid shallow stream crossed by a small wooden footbridge, plus two small woods for pleasant wanders and nature trails. The owners have set up a simple system for showering, and guests can make use of a basic composting toilet too. Smashing views of the chalk hills beyond the field, and the area is dotted with lots of lovely flowers in spring and summer, including purple orchids and bluebells. For basic supplies, the local village shop is a mile away, and you can procure pints at one of the two nearby pubs too.

Local attractions

Ditch the car: nearby lies the fab Wessex Ridgeway long-distance walking trail, which runs between Marlborough in Wiltshire to Lyme Regis in Dorset along the northern edge of Salisbury Plain and across Cranborne Chase, providing walkers some pretty spectacular views of the Dorset countryside. Right next door is also Bell Hill, a top local paragliding spot set across 45 acres of chalk downland, and the area is popular with horse riders riders due to the splendidly scenic hacks that can be had – and lack of traffic. There are lots of excellent spots within an hour’s drive of Lowbrook Cottage Field: the metropolitan cafés, restaurants, bars and bistros, and museums, glorious gardens and historic houses of Dorchester – Dorset’s county town – are a 40-minute drive away, and the medieval cathedral city of Salisbury is about the same distance in the opposite direction. For something seasidey, the jaw-dropping Jurassic Coast and the Purbeck Heritage Coast’s smashing and plentiful sandy beaches are about an hour’s drive away; top tip: be sure to check out Middle Beach, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door along the Lulworth coastline. Longleat Safari Park, and Stonehenge are all around an hour’s drive away too.
