  • Secret hideaway in Devon
  • In a birdwatching haven
  • Newly refurbished amenities block with free hot showers
Bring your binoculars if you're staying at peaceful and well-kept Acorn Farm Touring Park: this is a birdwatching haven with over 20 species to see in the surrounding countryside. And bring your walking boots, as Acorn Farm is between Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks and has miles' worth of hikes in the immediate area (ask friendly warder Jan for a booklet detailing some of the ambles available locally). And your bike or some cash to hire one, as this is near the Tarka Trail too… Acorn Farm is set over two and a half acres with countryside views to give guests a real feel of peace and quiet, and has a recently refurbished amenities block with free hot showers, washing-up sinks and a laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer. Chemical disposal is next to the loo block. The farm's local village is Dolton, which has three pubs, an antique shop, a butcher with delicatessen counter and a village shop and post office, both well-stocked.

Route directions

Acorn Farm is directly behind the Royal Oak Pub. We suggest you access the park from the A3124. From the south From the A30, join the A3124 at Whiddon Down or from Exeter/Crediton the A377 - B3220 then onto the A3124. From the north We suggest going via the B3227 to Great Torrington or taking the B3127, then joining the A3124. Once on the A3124, take the Dolton turn off at Dolton Beacon (there is a large garage on the junction). Drive into Dolton village and at the war memorial bear right into Fore Street (the park is signposted on war memorial wall). In front of you (150 yards) is the Royal Oak pub. Acorn Farm is to the left of the Royal Oak, and the park entrance is accessed at the side of the pub and the village square.

Local attractions

Acorn Farm Touring Park is well placed to get to many of Devon's main attractions and towns, and is within easy access of the coast at Saunton Sands and Westward Ho! Walking, cycling and horse riding can be had at both Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks; a golf course is five miles away and fishing is available nearby at Stafford Moor. Feeling adventurous? Make your way to the local airfield for a microlight lesson. The Tarka Trail, following the route of the otter in Henry Williamson's book, passes Dolton in an 180-mile figure of eight of walkways and cycle paths. His cottage (Williamson not otter) is at the small village of Georgham and has been kept as it was in Williamson's lifetime. For town days, the market towns of Bideford and Barnstaple are a short drive away: Bideford for several interesting shops and the ferry to Lundy Island, and Barnstaple for colourful flowers and its indoor market selling local pottery, pictures and food on different days (the Acorn Farm team recommends the fudge from the shop in the corner by the main entrance). Exeter is also very much worth a look, around its shops, cathedral and ancient buildings, and Plymouth for Plymouth Hoe and its aquarium before a bite and a drink at the Barbican.
