  • Rural off-grid site in the middle of south Cornwall
  • Around 15 minutes' drive to the surf spots of Portreath and Porthtowan
  • Guests are welcome to borrow outdoor games, kayaks and surfboards
How about sailing, windsurfing, kayaking or paddle boarding at Stithians Lake? Or perhaps you'd prefer surfing Portreath and Porthtowan, or something land-based like riding on horseback from the stables that lie just a short walk away? Have the whole heap with a stay at Rustic Comfy Camping, on the edge of Redruth and a straightforward six miles from the sands and the sea of Cornwall's north coast and the tiptop surfing spots of Portreath and Porthtowan. And the name suggests, this spectacularly scenic site likes to keep things nice and simple but comfortable: the basic kitchen tent comes equipped with crockery, utensils and cutlery for up to eight guests, as well as pots and pans and a three-ring gas hob. Tucked into a sheltered corner of the field are also a composting toilet and a separate shower tent that's more than ample enough for a quick morning spruce and to wash the seaside sand and salt off after days spent surfing, sunbathing and strolling. As the site is totally off grid, you're guaranteed a real rural retreat here: there's no electricity or wifi, just a set of solar-powered lights to help you find the toilet in the dark a battery-powered light in the kitchen to illuminate nighttime potters. For leisure time on site you can borrow various games such as giant Jenga and a rounders kit, and there's plenty of space for kids to run around in – and assist you in your mission to have some water-based fun around the local area, Rustic Comfy Camping will lend you an old surfboard or a kayak if you need one for the day. Pickups from Redruth train station, five minutes' drive away, can be arranged with the site's helpful owners.

Local attractions

Right near the north Cornwall coast, Rustic Comfy Camping is surrounded by all sorts of activity opps to help you fill your days with fun stuff; for a start, the Mineral Tramways Coast to Coast cycle route runs past the bottom of the field for pedals out to Portreath – and if you don't bring your own bike, you can always have the site's friendly owners arrange for a rental to be delivered direct to the park. There's also a horse riding centre a short walk away for canters around the bridlepaths that run across the local area. Over at Stithians Lake, less than three miles away, windsurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and sailing are on the menu for water-based buffoonery; on land, a pirate-themed play area awaits the littlies, and there's a 4.8-mile circular lakeside walking and cycling trail with a nature walk and a birdwatching hide to keep you occupied for a good day at the very least. For something more seasidey, Cornwall's north coast is a mere 15 min drive away from base, with the splendid surf spots of Portreath and Porthtowan being your nearest beaches. Rustic Comfy Camping is also within easy reach of fabuloso Falmouth, where guests can check out several more sandy beaches and visit the National Maritime Museum before wandering around its streets and boutiques to pick up souvenirs and, of course, stop for ice cream in between. Historians will find plenty of inspiration at nearby Poldark Mine, and thrill seekers will have their fill on the sky-high rides, rollercoasters and recreation areas at Flambards theme park over in Helston.
