Cornish Tipi Holidays: Morning view from the tipi

General

  • Peaceful site on the north Cornish coast
  • Five minutes' drive from the nearest beach
  • On-site lake for swimming, boating, and trout fishing

There is, perhaps, nothing better than landing your own trout on a campsite fishing lake... and then landing it in a pan over a campfire for dinner. Unless it’s waking up to the sounds of birds twittering and then – with luck – the sizzling sound of a bacon and egg breakfast being cooked by a considerate beloved and carried lovingly into your tipi?

If you have a beloved who seems allergic to frying pans, you might think your chances of having breakfast cooked for you on holiday are approximately nil. But the romantic feel of this place might be catching: there’s been at least one proposal a year at Cornish Tipi Holidays near Polzeath on the north Cornish coast since it opened in 1997...

This site's always a huge hit with families and kids, but grandparents, loved-up couples, honeymooners, weekend breakers, artists, surfers and painters, and all sorts of Cornish holidaymakers have bedded down in the woodland valley at Cornish Tipi Holidays over the years, so you should toddle along to it to see why it all works so well.

Cornish Tipi Holidays is owned by Elizabeth, whose family has worked the farmland and quarries around this area for 11 generations, and she’ll be happy to give advice, info and directions to wherever tickles your Cornish fancy. So come one, come all – just be sure to remember the lemon, black pepper and, possibly, the champagne...?

Please note

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, customers can amend their dates with the campground/park free of charge for all stays up to, and including, 12/31/2021.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 04/17 and 10/01 (subject to weather conditions).

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Single-sex bookings of 20 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Entertainment and activities are available between 04/17 and 10/01.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site is a glorious outdoor wedding venue and in the busy summer wedding season there may well be a wedding or two during your stay. Campers are usually a long way from the festivities but it's a good thing to be aware of when booking your trip.

No dogs allowed (except guide dogs).

A really beautiful campsite -worlds away from anywhere (although only about 15 mins from the beach!) It took us a few days to decompress but once we had we really appreciated the wonderful surrounds of this site. Such lush greenery and great privacy (we had tipi on a private pitch). The lake was wonderful too, my daughter opened her eyes each morning and demanded we go kayaking straight away - she just loved it. The staff were super helpful and nice too.

    Disliked:

The showers had low pressure in our block so weren't working properly, and as we were in a tipi on a fixed site - unless a wild camping pitch, with nice soft grass that you might pitch your own tent on, the ground under us was super hard so made for rather an uncomfortable nights sleep. It would have been good to know of this in advance but we would definitely go back with better bedding next time.

The site is amazing and the whole staff team were great. I turned up in the rain having booked a tent pitch and asked if they had a tipi which they did. It was amazing - massive and with all the gear for cooking and a fire. Loos and showers were great.

A gem of a place - strongly recommended.

Thanks so much for your lovely review - and beautiful pictures! The showers and hot water sink in the area you stayed in hadn't quite finished being built...that's why they weren't working! Sorry about that - but they are all completed and working now. Come back anytime to check them out...

Wells not allowed to park car next to tent?!

From the manager...

Great you liked our location and the lake - sorry that you were annoyed not to be able to park right next to your tent. In a place with not too many rules unfortunately this is one of them. We do say clearly on our website that we ask people to park in the parking areas and only use their car for loading and unloading beginning and end of your stay. Otherwise the whole campsite become a giant car park, rather than a green space of woodland and meadow where children can run and play without fear of being run over...not to mention our bunnies & free range chickens!

From the manager...

Thanks for your lovely comments - the lake can be pretty bracing at times...depends if you free style it without a wetsuit! It's much warmer in the summer though. We are renovating the loos & showers as we go but Covid has definitely put a few plans on the back burner - hopefully more will be able to happen at the end of the season.

What a holiday, what a campsite, what an area!

From entering the premises, we were greeted by beautiful scenery and winding roads that took us into the heart of the campsite. The groundsman was very accommodating and understood we had never been from the area. He gave us a list of nice restaurants, pubs, and local attractions of varying styles to suit our wants and our needs. He also provided us with a handful of reliable cab companies and shuttle services in the area to help us get by. Once we arrived at our tipi, we were pleasantly surprised at the amount of camping equipment they had left for our personal use, this included a gas camping stove, kettle, sleeping mats, camping kitchen wares and a cooler.

The facilities within the campsite were great as well! There were centralised toilets for the different campsites within Cornish Tipi Holidays, warm water, toilet paper, and soap for both hands and your dishes. They provided kayaks and paddleboats (free of charge by the way) for campers use on their personal lake. The campsites were far enough away that we didn't feel like we were intruding on anyone else's stay and vice versa.

Overall, I would recommend to anyone looking to visit Cornwall to try one of these amazing Tipi camping experiences by Cornish Tipi Holidays.

Local attractions

Cornish Tipi Holidays is five minutes’ drive from the nearest swimming beach, Port Gaverne, and from the fishing village of Port Isaac which Doc Martin fans will doubtless recognise from the gogglebox.

From Port Gaverne, wander the half mile west to Port Isaac to wander among its narrow streets and have a happy morning sourcing the freshest mackerel, crabs and scallops to buy. Or stay above the town to keep on hiking along the clifftop, south to Polzeath and Rock or north to Boscastle and Tintagel ten and 12 miles along the coast from your pitch.

Going watersporting? Course you are, you’re in Cornwall. If you’re on holiday with the kids, both the beach at Port Gaverne and the one at Daymer Bay about 15 minutes’ drive away are particularly suitable for smaller swimmers; the lack of surf at Daymer means it’s one of the best and safest places in Cornwall to learn windsurfing too.

If you do want to surf or learn how to – course you do, you’re in Cornwall – bring your board or the means to hire one to Polzeath about six miles from base, or a bit further down the coast to Newquay.

Must see

  • Tintagel Castle (6.1 miles)
  • Rock Beach (7.2 miles)
  • Cornwall's Crealy Great Adventure Park (9.4 miles)

  • Tintagel Old Post Office (5.7 miles)
  • Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps (13.3 miles)
