Elysian Fields: Some happy guests enjoying the sunshine

General

  • Family-run site a short walk from pubs in Ashton and Breage
  • Three miles from the beach, harbour and restaurants of Porthleven
  • Playground, licensed shop and bar/restaurant on site

According to Greek mythology, the original ‘Elysian Fields’ were beautiful meadows, the ultimate paradise, and a place to enjoy perfect happiness. Believed to be in the west, at the end of the earth, and surrounded by ‘Oceanus’, they provided sanctuary and breathed new life into all those worthy of entering.

Cornwall’s own Elysian Fields is between the little villages of Breage and Ashton, with seven acres of serene space and scenic views towards Tregonning Hill, as well as distant glimpses of the sea and cliffs of the Lizard peninsula. Pitch up here and you’ll be able to stroll along quiet footpaths to the local villages or walk to the top of Tregonning Hill, which stands at 194 metres and gives views from coast to coast over west Cornwall, including Mount’s Bay and St Ives. More adventurous walkers can explore the Godolphin Estate, while those who’ve come along for the coast can take a short drive to the ancient harbour at Porthleven or gorgeous Praa Sands beach.

The site has its own bar and restaurant, Tony's Tavern, with draught Cornish beers and cider. Cornish breakfasts and lighter breakfast baps are available in the mornings between 9am and 11am, and a range of evening meals are on offer between 6pm and 9pm. Takeaway meals can be delivered to the pitches if you prefer.

To make your stay more comfortable, picnic benches, windbreaks and firepits can be hired, with a plentiful supply of kiln-dried logs on sale in the shop to help warm up cooler evenings.

Also on site are a playground, a small shop, and a laundry room with coin-operated washing machines and a tumble dryer. Guests also have free use of two large freezers, a fridge, an iron and ironing board, and a microwave.

Please note

The bar is open between 01/01 and 12/31.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The grocery shop is open between 01/01 and 12/31.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

I liked everything about this site. Nice flat pitch of a reasonable size. We had electric hookup.
Exellent facilities, a laundry room with washers and dryers, iron and board. Fridges and freezers and a microwave. Small fee for the washing machine and dryers but everything else free.
Lovely toilet area and ladies showers great, my partner informed me men's not as good, always spotlessly clean.
Tony's Tavern was a delight, great food and a good choice of drinks. There is also a lovely 'local' about half a mile away, easy walkable.

Would book here again. Nice and central for visiting the area.

We really enjoyed our week at Elysian Fields. The staff were extremely friendly. We loved a drink at Tony’s Tavern each evening whilst our boys played football with the other children. The play park and space for the children to play was amazing. It felt very safe for the children which is important. We loved chatting to the staff at Tony’s Tavern. We felt the whole site had a lovely community feel. Everywhere was very clean, the facilities were cleaned regularly. We can’t wait to book again for next year.

    Disliked:

Only a small criticism as we managed perfectly, but there were a lack of sinks to wash and brush teeth, and the showers were very dated, although they were always very warm. Having said this, this wouldn’t put us off going again as it is, however a new shower block is in the process of being built and looks amazing.

As it was my very first experience at the camping I didn’t know what to expect. At the Elysian I was positive surprised how great camping can be. All people working there amd owners are soooo sooo lovely and helpful. They make our first experience stress less. Everything was clean and tidy. Location is perfect as it lots of great beaches and tourist attractions around. I definitely recommended this place. My children was happy around many other children playing together ant the want to go again. I can’t compare to any other place as I said I’ve been first time this June but it’s looks like I will be back there July;)) with other family we went with who also font this place excellent and says that Elysian had it all there what is need 😉👍 ⭐️

Well maintained pitches - fairly level
    Friendly staff
Great location for exploring South Cornwall (we visited Porthleven, St Ives, Lands End, Hayle, Kynance Cove, Lizard and Falmouth which were all within a 30ish minute drive of the site)
    Ladies toilets kept clean
    Bar on site

    Disliked:

Showers were very basic and could have been maintained a bit better. Previous sites we've stayed on have left fresh mop buckets throughout the day to help with cleaning/sanitising which we've found great especially with Covid.

There is a sign saying quiet between 10pm-7am. Unfortunately, we were pitched very close to a family who did not observe this rule. They were loud (swearing and arguing) constantly and this worsened at night. We reported it one night and a member of staff knew which family we meant straight away. He asked the man who was sitting in and running his van to turn his van/headlights off because of other guests. This sort of behaviour contained throughout our stay and that aspect was unpleasant. We were glad we didn't have children with us this time as the language was foul. If there is a 10pm-7am quiet period then staff should make sure this is respected by all. Other sites we've stayed on have done a very good job of making sure campers are respecting the rules at night. The dog was also rarely on a lead so it wandered off - all we could hear was the man bellowing the dog's name to call him back - would have been avoided if kept on a lead. If this hadn't have happened throughout our entire stay, we'd have had a really relaxing and pleasant stay at Elysian.

From the manager...

Your comments are very welcome and we shall provide a mop in each shower block an excellent idea. Our new shower block will be finished within the next few months and will be state of the art.

Unfortunately we do get on a few occasions noisy campers, thankfully this is not very often. Our campsite staff spoke with the group you mention on several occasions but they totally disrespected them. The group will be banned from our site, and we need to put into place another way to deal with such inconsiderate people.

Dogs are supposed to be on leads, and again we shall look into a way of dealing with people that do not follow our rules. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and we can only apologise for the experience that you had.

Groups are not normally allowed but often they book through sites individually to get around the rules.

Local attractions

Having gazed out over Tregonning Hill, it's a fine idea to amble over there for a closer look. It’ll take you around 45 minutes of leisurely walking to get to the top for some excellent views over both north and south coasts and plenty of historical info on the old mining pits and war memorial.

Likewise, the beaches you’ve glimpsed from afar look pretty fab from up close too. The sands of Porthleven, three miles away, are the nearest, and there are plenty of others a short drive away, including Praa Sands and Marazion (from where you can take a boat or cross the causeway to St Michael’s Mount).

Arty types may like to spend a day in St Ives, half an hour’s drive away, taking in the exhibits of Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Perhaps less highbrow but equally entertaining are the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek and the rides and attractions at The Flambards Experience, both of which are around a 15-minute drive away.

Must see

  • Flambards (3.9 miles)
  • St Michael's Mount (6.0 miles)
  • National Seal Sanctuary (6.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Godolphin (2.0 miles)
  • Penrose Estate: Gunwalloe and Loe Pool (2.6 miles)
