General

  • Peaceful working farm in the South Downs National Park
  • Within 10 minutes’ drive of woodlands, stately homes and vineyards
  • Haven for stargazers: in a Dark Sky Reserve

Green pastures, river valleys, ancient woodlands and stunning coastlines… If that’s ticking all the boxes, park up for your hols at Sandy Meadow Farm, a family-friendly site on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Pulborough in West Sussex.

In the South Downs National Park, Sandy Meadow is a top spot for ramblers, bikers and riders: there are hundreds of miles of waymarked trails and bridleways to explore in the park, and if your interests follow more of a treasure hunting vibe, you can also have a go at geocaching.

Back on site, chill out in the quiet meadow before cooking in the guest kitchen or firing up the barbecue (pick up supplies from the supermarket 15 minutes away). If you need a break from looking after your own needs, make your way to one of the restaurants within 15 minutes to have someone else do all the hard work.

And after that? The South Downs National Park is a Dark Sky Reserve, so get outside once the sun sets, turn your eyes to the skies and take it all in.

We stayed here as close to goodwood festival of speed.
Nice amount of room between pitches.
Owners nice people - welcoming and friendly.

    Disliked:

No showers (this is stated on website) but was hoping for a least a toilet block with sink I could have Strip wash in.
toilets of which there are 2 are in converted horse box - fine. Sink in a shed next doors.
    Facilities need more work.

Small peaceful level site with friendly owners, very reasonable pitch fee. Not far from Goodwood in a very pretty part of Sussex. Would definitely stay again

    Disliked:

No shower/toilet block at present but we are told this will be provided, along with electric hook ups. First impression on approaching site was a bit disappointing ie rusty agricultural machinery but sure the owners will deal with this as part of their improvements.

good for star gazing and a break form the city. 07/01/2019

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Anne T. Confirmed

  • Liked:

The site was situated in a very peaceful area and the was very dark at night ideal for star gazing. Though very basic the toilet facilities were clean and usable.

    Disliked:

The pitches offered little or no privacy as you were overlooked from every angle, with the proprietor walking around the site stepping onto your vehicle without knocking. There was also a fight over the electrical supply as only two working electrical supplies were offered and one seemed to be out of order during our stay.

From the manager...

I am sorry you feel this way. I have no recollection of, and was not aware, of the matters you raise. I wish you had raised them with me during your stay so that we could have addressed them for you. We are a working Farm with very basic facilities that we are working hard to improve. Thank you for your visit, I hope you enjoyed the peace and quiet.

Lovely quiet site and setting in the woods and great opportunity to get back in touch with nature. Whole camp site was quiet by about 10pm.
    Very tidy camping area.
Nice bridleway walk across a quiet road which was great for the dog.
Great hosts as friendly and informative about the site and local area.
Toilets are unique as placed in a horse box and they were very clean and well kept, we didn’t mind the quirkinesses of them.
Bring a torch as there are no lights in the camping area which for us was perfect.

Local attractions

There’s lots around here to keep history buffs counting their lucky stars: the Bignor Roman Villa, Coultershaw Heritage Site and Beam Pump, and the vintage steam and diesel trains of South Downs Light Railway are all roughly 10 minutes' drive from the farm.

Of course anoraks won’t be content with just that, so make a beeline for one (or all?) of the many stately homes in the area if you want a bit more. Spectacular Petworth House, Arundel Castle and Parham House are all within 15 minutes of Sandy Meadow, and you can also take a turn around the gardens at Woolbeding 25 minutes away.

Also less than half an hour from the site is Goodwood Estate – make your way here for the tour (and afternoon tea) at Goodwood House, or for something a little more high octane at the racecourse, moto circuit or aerodrome. Time your visit just right and you might be around for one of its famed events like the Festival of Speed, Goodwood Revival or the Goodwood Festival.

Tipplers, when you think of wine regions, do you think of France, Spain, Italy, Chile, South Africa and… the South Downs? No? Well you should – the area is holding its own as a wine producer, and you can do tours and tastings at Stopham Vineyard and Winery, Upperton Vineyards and Wiston Estate Winery, all less than 25 minutes away.

You can also get out in nature at Lord’s Piece untouched heathland less than five minutes away, or entertain the kids with a visit to Fishers Adventure Farm Park (20 minutes).
