  • Peaceful working farm in the South Downs National Park
  • Within 10 minutes’ drive of woodlands, stately homes and vineyards
  • Haven for stargazers: in a Dark Sky Reserve
Green pastures, river valleys, ancient woodlands and stunning coastlines… If that’s ticking all the boxes, park up for your break at Sandy Meadow Farm, a family-friendly site on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Pulborough in West Sussex. In the South Downs National Park, Sandy Meadow is a top spot for ramblers, bikers and riders: there are hundreds of miles of waymarked trails and bridleways to explore in the park, and if your interests follow more of a treasure-hunting vibe, you can also have a go at geocaching. Back on site, chill out in the quiet meadow before cooking in the guest kitchen or firing up the barbecue (pick up supplies from the supermarket 15 minutes away). If you need a break from looking after your own needs, make your way to one of the restaurants within 15 minutes to have someone else do all the hard work. And after that? The South Downs National Park is an International Dark Sky Reserve, so get outside once the sun sets, turn your eyes to the skies and take it all in.

Local attractions

There’s a lot around here to keep history buffs counting their lucky stars: the Bignor Roman Villa, Coultershaw Heritage Site and Beam Pump, and the vintage steam and diesel trains of South Downs Light Railway are all roughly 10 minutes' drive from the farm. Beyond those, make a beeline for one (or all?) of the many stately homes in the area if you want a bit more. Spectacular Petworth House, Arundel Castle and Parham House are all within 15 minutes of Sandy Meadow, and you can also take a turn around the gardens at Woolbeding (25 minutes away). Also less than half an hour from the site is Goodwood Estate – make your way here for the tour (and afternoon tea) at Goodwood House, or for something a little more high octane at the racecourse, moto circuit or aerodrome. Time your visit just right and you might be around for one of its famed events like the Festival of Speed, Goodwood Revival or the Goodwood Festival. Tipplers, when you think of wine regions, do you think of France, Spain, Italy, Chile, South Africa and… the South Downs? No? Well you should – the area is holding its own as a wine producer, and you can do tours and tastings at Stopham Vineyard and Winery, Upperton Vineyards and Wiston Estate Winery, all less than 25 minutes away. You can also get out in nature at Lord’s Piece untouched heathland less than five minutes away, or entertain the kids with a visit to Fishers Adventure Farm Park (20 minutes).

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite (basic)

Liked: The location is good - out of the way with some good walks and open access land very close by. The strip where we parked our van along the edge of the field is flat.

Disliked: The toilets. Oh man, the toilets. They are utterly disgusting. I’ve camped in dozens of sites over the years and they rank amongst the worst. Firstly, they are quite a trek from the camping field with no lights or signs showing where they are. The gents consist of a small rusty container that has been poorly converted into housing 2 toilets and 2 urinals. There was mud all over the floor, no soap and no method of drying your hands At no point in our 3 night stay we’re they cleaned or any hand towels provided. We avoided using them whenever we could. Bearing in mind we paid £40 a night, I expect a reasonable never of cleanliness but the owner clearly can’t be bothered to spend any time on such matters. I will definitely not be returning.

This appears to be a new venue undergoing refurbishment which will enhance even further the holiday.
The young couple who run the place are charming ,could not be more accommodating,I wish them every success .

Power optional grass and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lots of space, beautiful location.

Disliked: We didn’t get our electric hook up because everyone had been told to set up “wherever” so when we arrived the electric hook up spots were all taken - presumably people who hadn’t booked them had taken them. The toilets are badly maintained, no locks, no loo roll, not cleaned. There was no one to really help us, we were just told to transfer money into a specific bank account and then asked three times whether we had or not so there was clearly no system for checking. There are no bins or showers. We won’t be staying here again.

Power optional grass and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked: Very peaceful site in a beautiful setting. Very ideally located in the edge of the national park and getting about to Brighton and Amberly and Arundel.
The owner was great and extremely helpful, could not do enough for us! The weather was very wet and he was there to help a couple of units who go stuck in mud…. That’s all part of camping, but I understand he is creating some hard standing pitches now to help in this matter.
Had a great break away and would thoroughly recommend this site. We will definitely be returning! Thanks again 😀

Liked: This was a trip to meet up with family in Sussex
This was not a problem to the owner to have extra people for a curry the 1st night then a BBQ the 2nd night.
We did get stuck in the mud, but this was not an issue, we were helped out and in with not a problem.
We knew that there was no shower facilities, therefore we were not expecting any.
Loved the remoteness of the site and the night sky was stunning.

Power optional grass and sand travel trailer campsite

Liked: Quiet location, no light pollution. Owner friendly and helpful, stayed on the phone to offer directions. Waived the fee in exchange for a good review. Electric hookup worked perfectly.

Disliked: Campsite very difficult to find and the phone number doesnt work, the owner is contactable via email though. The site was very muddy and camp fires had been lit directly on the grass. Both toilet and washing up facilities were not clean. The toilet doors didnt lock, there was no toilet paper or way to dry hands. £40 a night is expensive for such a basic site. The dog barking at us as we walked past was a bit scary too.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: As I arrived at this "campsite" there was no sign of anyone there. The grounds were empty and reception was closed. I tried to call the number on the website but it rung dead.

I eventually found a man with a very aggressive dog who told me the owners were away. When I explained I had booked a camping spot, he told me he thought the pitches were at the back, but he wasn't sure.

I drove to the back and found an empty, muddy field with no facilities apart from a metal portaloo that said "gents" on it. Inside was dirty and there was no toilet roll.

I went out for a walk and returned around 5pm at which point I started walking up the drive and the dog was so aggressive that I couldn't get past. I had to return to the road and wait for someone to kindly give me a lift 200m up the road back to my car.

The man that gave me a lift new the owners and told me the dog had only bitten someone once (which I didn't find very reassuring). He said the owners had gone to Ireland for the weekend and had left the dog.

At that point I had my decision that I wouldn't be staying the night as despite me now sitting in my car, the dog was still barking and growling at me aggressively. Given it was free to roam all night, it could have decided it had an issue with me at any time.

I was so disappointed to have to drive back home to London, especially after they had taken part payment. I'm hoping to try and get this back.
