  • Family-friendly country site in South Downs National Park
  • Less than 10 minutes’ drive from Goodwood Estate festivals and events
  • Top spot for stargazing in Dark Sky Reserve
Stresses from your daily grind making life feel a bit sour? Get the bad taste out of your mouth with a sweet getaway at Orchard Cottage Campsite, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the small town of Petworth in West Sussex. Inside South Downs National Park, Orchard Cottage is a top spot to use as a base for exploring the spectacularly scenic Sussex countryside: ramblers, bikers and horseback riders can follow the bridleway from the site as far as the 100-mile-long South Downs Way, or pick up one of the many walking or cycling trails that crisscross the area around the site. Orchard Cottage is also well-placed for horse racing and motorsports events as the Goodwood Estate is less than 10 minutes from the site – time your stay right and you might be lucky enough to get a trackside seat at the Goodwood Revival, Festival of Speed or Glorious Goodwood. Relax in peace back on site, with nothing to disturb the quiet except for bird calls. When you’re feeling peckish, get that barbecue lit and load it up with goodies from the supermarket 10 minutes away, then tuck in next to the campfire and let your eyes drift skyward – this is a dark sky reserve, so a spot of stargazing is an absolute must. Fancy a bit of a treat? There are oodles of restaurants to try within 15 minutes of Orchard Cottage.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This is an awesome campsite with beautiful views and as near wild camping as it gets. Loo/shower block is very clean and perfect for what you need. Owner is a great bloke who made time to say hello and have a chat. Firewood and firepits are good.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Quiet calm campsite very basic but in good location for goodwood and a walk in the woods. Only one shower but worked well be good if hooks can be hung on back of door. Good to have use of fire pit and be able to hire logs from site. Owner very friendly.

Disliked: No where to put rubbish so had to take it with us and found bins in town. Be good if well behaved dogs could stay as my dog would have loved the walks and would stay on lead.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The stars were amazing to see in this dark skies reserve. The decent fire pit/bbq’s the owner had kindly made for campers to borrow. The grounds were fenced off and no cars around, so safe for kids. The trees provided shelter from the rain for a couple of hours so no gazebo needed. Friendly laidback owner allowed us to light our fires and left us to it without forcing us to put them out at his bed time! The sheep in the field beside us were entertainment for the kids as well.

Liked: Really pleased! Perfect location for Goodwood events. Plenty of room to pitch. Happy with the facilities toilets, sinks and showers. Even toilet paper.

Disliked: Sink area maybe a little unclean. Not necessarily the owners fault. More so the people that use them not leaving sinks clean etc.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Location is good for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, provided you're happy to drive in to the venue (a bit too far to walk). Site isn't too busy and there was plenty of space. Friendly owner. Both permits and provides campfires, and has wood for sale on site (cheaper than petrol station). Facilities were fine, though you might have to wait a bit. As the listing mentions, it does indeed get nice and dark at night (take a head torch). I've stayed in the Goodwood campsite a number of times and I would absolutely recommend this place as an alternative.

Disliked: There was nothing I disliked, however I think it's fair to warn that it's not a full-time campsite, and as such it's less formal than your typical camping and caravan club site (for example). As an experienced camper I find this a benefit, but first timers might find it a bot odd. Also, not the fault of the site but phone signal in the general area isn't great.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: This campsite was chosen for it's location and it is very close to Goodwood for the FOS. Across the crossroads and a few miles down the road and we were in. The host was very responsive by text (I believe I could have called if needs be) to confirm actual location. On arrival the host was very accommodating and we pitched with two tents. The site was quite considering it was fairly close to the main road. The shower was warm. logs were available for purchase and a log burners were available

Disliked: Male and female separate toilets would be ideal.

Local attractions

Goodwood Estate is an absolute must-visit and a prime spot for starting your explorations of West Sussex. It may be famous for racing, but Goodwood’s no slouch in other departments either – call in to Goodwood House for a guided tour and afternoon tea, play a round on one of the golf courses, or wander over to the aerodrome for a lesson or a sightseeing tour from the air. If Goodwood House has got you keen on stately piles, there’s no shortage nearby with the spectacular Petworth House, Arundel Castle, Uppark House and Parham House all within half an hour. History buffs may also be drawn to Bignor Roman Villa, Petworth Cottage Museum, Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre and Coultershaw Heritage Site, 15 minutes down the road. Grownups might want to add stops at Upperton Vineyards and Stopham Vineyard and Winery to their list, but there’s plenty to do around here with the kids too: start 10 minutes away with the Weald and Downland Living Museum (taking you through the lives of 1,000 years of Sussex dwellers), then travel on to Fishers Farm Adventure Park or, if you just want a laid-back day, the coast and Climping beach around 20 minutes from Orchard Cottage.
