  • Dog-friendly site surrounded by the Sussex countryside
  • A five-minute drive from Ashdown Forest and Weir Wood Reservoir
  • Access to a private woodland with ancient trees and a walking track
Touch down in the Sussex countryside, five minutes’ drive away from Ashdown Forest (known for its ancient heathlands and Winnie the Pooh territory). Ashdown Forest Campsite - 100 Acre Wood may have easy enough access to the big forest, but it also has its own private woodland full of ancient trees, oaks and wild woodland flowers, as well as a private walking trail. Just like the books, the woods on site have oak trees and lots of wildlife. Between the trees, you might hear the bees, but from the pitches, there are views of the sloping Sussex hills and old, dense woods. Pooh Sticks Bridge is only 15 minutes’ drive away for those whose kids are top Winnie the Pooh fans. All the exploring may very well work up an appetite, and if so, there are pubs five minutes’ drive away (good news for all those who consider pub grub a getaway essential). All those local and on-site forest trails will come in handy for those adventuring with their canines (the site is dog-friendly). Don your (figurative or literal) chef’s hat too, as the site has given barbecues the green light.

Local attractions

One way to take in the Sussex scenery is by steam train, gliding through Victorian stations via vintage carriages. The heritage Bluebell Railway (10 minutes’ drive) brings travel in the time of the 1930s and 1950s back to life. Longing for some time with the wildlife too? It’s hard to go far across Sussex landscapes without seeing a farm – or at least a farm animal – so get a taste of the farm life with a farm walk on Plaw Hatch Farm (15 minutes’ walk). The farm also lets visitors watch cow milking daily. The British Wildlife Centre (20 minutes) has more variety: badgers, British owls and red squirrels, for example. Golfer? Get down to the Ashdown Park Hotel & Country Club (five minutes’ drive) 18-hole course and spa. Weir Wood Reservoir (five minutes) is also on-hand for spotting birds like teal swifts, swallows, osprey and kingfisher, or sailing and fishing.

Forest primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: We loved the sinks and the view from there, the nature friendly toilets, the view from where we pitched our tent. We had a few hours hike and the area around is so beautiful with lovely ponds very nearby! The staff was also very helpful and gave us recommendations on where to go depending on what we like doing!

Forest primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful campsite! Ian made us feel extremely welcome, checking we had everything we needed and even lending us tent pegs. We loved the woodland and the way the pitches were nestled in to little clearings. Even if the site was fully booked you’d feel private. We walked in the woods and the meadow and watched the sunset before a campfire. Location is great - with a quick drive for shops and 45 minutes to Brighton. Will definitely be coming back!

Forest primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: Never got there, cancelled as we were leaving home

Disliked: Being let down at the last minute, the site had apparently been closed due to the issue of hunting license's, we were still allowed to book pitches a few weeks later, no apology, no follow up and keep receiving emails to review the site, l’m sure it is lovely but my review is of the structure around the booking system, l hope no one else gets let down and has their holiday cancelled.

Liked: The team kept in touch with us and gave us alternative campsites to stay at.

Disliked: Our stay was unusually cancelled because deer hunters were carrying guns in the nearby forest.
