Idling on the Isle of Wight? It’s made all the better with a trip to Waverley Park Holiday Centre, looking out over the bobbing boats of Cowes Harbour and the Solent. And why? Because this family-run site in a fab location is chock-full of handy amenities. An 18th-century manor house is at the head of the park, with a licensed clubhouse and terrace serving evening meals (from Easter to mid-September), and in high season activities and live music are organised nightly for all ages. Can’t get the younger members of your travel crew to stay put? The terrace overlooks the play area, so you can supervise the small fry while watching the ships cruise by from Southampton. The heated outdoor pool is another popular place (open May half-term to mid-September) for guests to gather while holidaying here. Lure your family away from the water with promises of island adventures: Waverley Park is within a 10-minute walk of Red Funnel's car ferry terminal and East Cowes (with its supermarkets, local shops and main bus routes), and the internationally famed yachting centre of Cowes is just across the Medina estuary from the park via a chain ferry that’s free for pedestrians. After sightseeing at Osborne, Queen Victoria’s seaside house (five minutes), wandering across beaches or dropping by museums and galleries, return to the park to catch one of the stunning sunsets over the Solent from the clubhouse terrace.

Local attractions

This park has guests well set for hols walking, driving or cycling around the Isle of Wight. Hire a bike in town for jaunts along paths crisscrossing the interior of the island or go forth to the coast and trace a track that runs along the whole of the 67-mile coast. Make sure to pack the swimming costume for stopping off at vast sandy shores like Sandown and Shanklin (both 25 minutes’ drive) or add a bit of rockpooling to the agenda with an afternoon at Bembridge beach (half an hour). There are plenty of other attractions on the island unrelated to the coast as well: think historic homes like Carisbrooke Castle (20 minutes), the adorable primates of Monkey Haven (10 minutes) and the theme park rides of Blackgang Chine (half an hour). If you’re booked in for a hol during Cowes Week in August, much of your time is likely to be spent investigating the spectacular events of one of the world’s oldest and biggest sailing regattas, held just across the water from the park.
