Marwell Activity Centre: Aerial view of the freshwater carp lake

General

  • Lakeside site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from central Winchester; 1.5 miles from Marwell Zoo
  • Fishing, archery, quad biking and other adventure sports

Lions, tigers and bokibokies await in these handsome Hampshire surrounds – taking the kids to see Marwell Zoo's multitude of beasts is likely to make for some very happy hols indeed. Marwell Activity Centre is within walking distance of this much-loved menagerie and is home to plenty of adventurous action in its own right – head here if you like the sound of oodles of outdoor activities in a pretty lakeside setting.

The team at Marwell Activity Centre have been instructing for more than 25 years so they're well qualified to help you try out sports like archery, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting.

The site lake has a total of nine swims available for anglers (mega-sized carp can be found in its waters, including whoppers weighing up to 45 pounds). Surrounded as it is by trees, it also looks pretty fine (especially at sundown) and is a popular spot with local wildlife.

Marwell Activity Centre has strong all-round facilities, including toilets, showers and wifi. There's also an on-site bistro restaurant that serves up nourishing meals seven days a week. You can set up a barbecue and cook your own grub, too (stock up on fresh meat and veg 15 minutes' drive away at Westlands Farm Shop).

The site was very well laid out with plenty of space per pitch. Facilities were great and they are working very hard on overhauling the centre after being closed during covid. Whilst some were still closed you could see how much care and attention has been given to the various areas. The upcoming mini golf course looks fantastic, original crashed plane from the site and all!

We participated in an afternoon of archery which the entire family enjoyed. This was very well run and the coach was very engaging with the kids especially.

On a whim we booked in to the restaurant on Sunday evening with some friends who were visiting. The food was far better than expected and, as an added bonus, we happened to meet the owner of the site who told us the back story which was very interesting.

The surrounding area was fantastic for walking the dogs, the office offered maps with routes printed on them for suggestions. Our favourite walk was across fields, woods and an airfield to the local pub (The Brushmakers) which was about 7km each way.

Every staff member we met was friendly and extremely helpful. They have a great team.

    Definitely recommended!

There was just me and my dog Tayto, for two nights. Checked in easily. Spoke to other families and all agreed that even with activities being closed due to Covid there was enough to do. The woodland walk was perfect especially if you've got kids (4 different ways to get across the lake). Two large football goals in each camping area. Plenty of outdoor seating at the bar which seemed to be well enjoyed.

Stayed here the 1st weekend after lock down and loved it so went back again. Site is brilliantly laid out and very dog friendly (we have 2 spaniels). The pitches are laid in a ring so kids have space to play. Toliet/shower facilities are good and clean. The site has a great bar/grill, the activities are really good. The staff are extremely polite and friendly. Coming soon (end may) is adventure gold, we will go back again several times. The owner has done a great job and looks like is continuously looking to improve. There is no WiFi available but mobile signal is good and I understand they are looking to be able to boost the mobile signal

Great family friendly site. The grass pitches are level and well kept. Lots to do with the kids and the upcoming completion of the crazy golf will be a fun addition for sure. The shower and toilet facilities are in top condition, kept very clean and plenty of hot water. On-site cafe and the restaurant serve delicious food. We stayed for 3 nights in our own tent but on one of the nights my husband and our son stayed in a bivvy together to enjoy some carp fishing. He was so pleased to catch a 12/13lb carp and couple of other smaller ones. Highly recommend this place and we will be back again!

    Disliked:

Beware the taps of the sinks in the shower block are ferocious: you will get soaked. The water is warm though as a plus. Only one other suggestion for the shower block is it could do with some hooks on the back of the loo door or somewhere about the block.

From the manager...

What a lovely review thank you very much and well done for hooking one of our beautiful carp! Now you've caught the bug you'll have to come back and try and catch one of our 35lb+ monsters! Thanks again and see you again soon.

Local attractions

Marwell Zoo (five minutes' drive) has over 140 different species to admire – you can also leave the car back at base and stroll over (about 20 minutes) for a pedestrian safari. Paultons Park (25 minutes' drive) is another perennial fave for family-oriented days out – here you can meet Peppa Pig, crash down log flumes or opt for wanders through a dinosaur-filled forest.

The South Downs National Park has some truly splendid hiking trails, including the 100-mile-long South Downs Way (the trail starts 15 minutes down the road in Winchester). Mountain bikers also have plenty to choose from around these parts – an exhilarating bike track through the woods is on hand in the nearby village of Bishopstoke (10 minutes).

The gorgeous New Forest National Park (25 minutes) is also within easy reach, and one of the best ways to get around is by open-top tour bus. There are three routes to choose from – it all comes down to whether you prefer vistas of heather-covered heathland or coastal explores. Speaking of the sea, beaches like Lepe and Highcliffe Castle (both 40 minutes) are very much worth the journey (make sure to pack jelly shoes and a towel if at all tempted).
