General

  • Small site among spectacular scenery on the River Ouse
  • Campfires encouraged: forage for kindling around the site
  • Rope swings, hammocks and play area

On the banks of the River Ouse opposite the Bluebell Railway, Ouse Meadow is a site for back-to-nature stays in the scenic Sussex countryside. The emphasis here is on wild camping in peace and quiet, with campfires allowed.

Pitches aren't marked, so you can pitch in any spot that suits. Several rope swings, hammocks and a play area including swingball and badminton are on hand to keep the kids happy.

The owners believe that a small campfire is a crucial part of family camping: foraging for kindling is allowed (and popular with kids), but for ecological reasons big logs from the woods shouldn't be burned and obviously no branches should be cut from trees... not that you'd do that anyway...

Amenities on site include a drinking water tap, toilets and hot showers. The owners sell sacks of logs, kindling and firelighters.

Please note this is a small basic site, so has no washing-up facilities. The team also asks that all rubbish is taken home with you on departure.

Flat pitches with lovely views over the Ouse river and a good little woodland for children to play in with rope swings etc. Our children wanted to live in there.

The site is within easy walking distance of Sheffield Park railway and National Trust. Liked that you could have campfires at night, which some campsites don’t let you do. Logs, kindling and fire pits for sale/ hire at a decent price.

    Owner was friendly and amenable.

    Disliked:

We chose this campsite as it looked so quiet and rural but were really disappointed on the first night to discover that there is a lorry waste depot, or something similar, just on the other side of the hedge. There were intermittent loud crashing, clanging noises 24/7. On the first night there were lorry engines running incessantly and loud voices from 2am and we hardly slept. It wasn’t so bad the second night (although still not quiet) but this would definitely put us off staying here again. Would highly recommend ear plugs if you are planning to stay.

We expected basic but the toilets didn’t look like they were cleaned for the whole of our stay and bins in the ladies were overflowing for 3 days. There are no rubbish bins on site, which is inconvenient. Loading two stinky bin bags of waste into a car crammed full of sleeping bags/ people etc is not very pleasant. A couple of big bins (one recycling and one general waste) by the entrance would be great to allow people to get rid of rubbish as they go and would probably encourage a cleaner/ greener site.

Be prepared that there are no shops or pubs within walking distance so if you run out of anything you’ll need to jump in the car.

  • Liked:

Lovely site in terms of wild camping, rope swings, nice clean loos. Really liked the fact that it was chilled. Kids felt safe and could climb trees and use the swing balls and badminton nets round the site. So close to the Bluebell Railway, which we really liked going on too - and a nice microbrewery over the way.
Firepits and logs a nice touch.

Four star is only because only one of the showers was working by Monday (out of three) and there was no shop or honesty box on site for milk etc - but that was all fine for us.

Loved the fact that cars were meant to be driven off site after unloading , which added to wild camping feel - though it wasn't enforced - which meant our neighbours were running quite a large speaker off their car with constant Magic FM, which rather spoilt the atmosphere.

    Over all will be back!

    Disliked:

Nothing - just the picky points above would make it even better
