Sunset over the campsite

General

  • Herstmonceux pub site alongside the 1066 Country Walk
  • Varied food menu made emphasising fresh local produce
  • Secluded setting, weekly pub quiz and campfires allowed

The Bull’s Head…that doesn’t sound like a campsite, does it? In fact, it sounds more like a… pub.

But, happily for those who like to combine their beers with their breaks using the least effort possible, the Bull’s Head is both. Based in East Sussex at Herstmonceux (try saying that after a couple of pints), this site is both more secluded and quiet than you’d expect for being next to an imbibing emporium, and is listed as family-friendly. Which you might think rocks, rather...

Facilities at the site include a modern toilet block, a water standpipe and a chemical disposal point, and there’s no problem with cooking under the stars either as campfires are allowed in the pitching field.

For guests who’d rather get someone else to dish up dinner, plenty of pub grub options using mostly local produce can be had in the bar. You can even try and win a bottle of wine at the longstanding pub quiz on Monday nights: now there’s a reason to extend your weekend trip…

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Really lovely location next door to the beautiful pub (but out of eye and earshot of the pub's guests) - it was so nice to be able to head inside to warm up with a drink after an evening bbq. Within unbeatably easy access of the 1066 walking route, and only a 15 minute drive from East Sussex's beaches, we had a lovely stay! Site was picturesque and had plenty of space, toilet facilities were basic but clean.

    Disliked:

Lighting on the path to the campsite from the pub / to the toilet block would be helpful - luckily we had a torch though!

We had an amazing 2 nights stay at the campsite. Great size pitches with own firepit provided and away from the main road. Basic showers and toilets but very clean and had everything you need. The pub which owns the land was absolutely beautiful. All the staff and the owner were extremely helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. They didn't have any logs for sale but they pointed us in the right direction to purchase some. The owner remembered that he had a free sample of small logs which he kindly gave us and wouldn't take any money for them. Even the gardener sat and had a chat with us and the locals were really lovely too. We ate in the pub on the 2nd evening and it was amazing food. We were advised to book a table and so pleased we did. It got very busy and rightly so as the food was out of this world. The rates were very cheap and the prices in the pub were very reasonable for the quality of food and drink available. We will definitely return.

From the manager...

Oh! I am sorry that Mr.T from Eastbourne has
accused us of being Rubbish following his one night visit......
doesn't give a reason!

I am at a loss as to why we are "Rubbish" as most visitors
rather enjoy it her....see Reviews.
We are a simple Tranquil Campsite in a Rural setting with
good facilities....Toilets and Showers which are cleaned daily
...The Campsite is also checked at least three times a day to ensure
that all is well...and that there are plenty Loo Rolls!

Our nearby Pub is well regarded serving excellent Meals and
Sussex Ales....with wonderfully friendly and helpful Staff.

What more can I say?

Local attractions

With something called the 1066 Country Walk running past the site, it’s not a huge stretch to guess that this is battlefield country...

The 1066 Battle Abbey and Battlefield site is nearby to relive that all-important day in English history when King Harold (allegedly) got something in his eye, while there are other battle-y relics in neighbouring Hastings which also has Europe's biggest beachside fishing fleet and smuggling adventures at St Clements Caves.

The 1066 route is just one of the many scenic walks in the surrounding countryside, or for day trips, Herstmonceux is recommended with its castle and the rurally-set Herstmonceux Observatory Science Centre.

As well as walking, Sussex sightseers can take the Kent and East Sussex Railway to puff along from Tenterden through the countryside of the Rother valley to Bodiam with its National Trust castle, or stay closer to home with a trip on (or down) Hastings’s cliff railway which has the UK's steepest funicular railway. Hang on tight…

For less adrenaline-fuelled sightseeing, options include a stroll along the nearby beaches – the seaside is just a short drive away – or a dander around Darwell Reservoir, surrounded by ancient woodland and the chance to spot woodpeckers and tawny owls.

Meanwhile, mini battlers will be more than happy with the abundance of attractions in the area aimed at the little people, from the Blue Reef Aquarium at Hastings to getting bug-eyed at the birds of prey at Hailsham’s Knockhatch Adventure Park.

Must see

  • 1066 Battle Abbey and Battlefield (5.8 miles)
  • Batemans (7.8 miles)
  • Eastbourne Pier (8.3 miles)

  • Bateman's (7.7 miles)
