Brakes Coppice Park: On site

General

  • In a secluded valley between Battle and Hastings
  • Wildlife haven: spot badgers, foxes, deer, rabbits, owls and hedgehogs
  • Fishing lake, dog trail, coffee shop, adventure play and wardens 24hrs

As you might guess from the name, Brakes Coppice Park is a woodland site. But you’ll need to stop for a sec and have a look at the site pics to get a full sense of just how scenic and well maintained it is: expect tall trees, carpets of spring bluebells, excellent facilities and wildlife all around.

The park is in a secluded East Sussex valley between Battle and Hastings, deep in 1066 Country and with pitches surrounded by the owners’ private woodland. Look out for species of all sorts during your stay here: the woods are home to – among many others – foxes, rabbits, badgers and squirrels; woodpeckers, owls, buzzards and bats; mice, voles and hedgehogs; grass snakes and slow worms; dragonflies and damsonflies… and plants of all sorts including ferns, orchids, foxgloves and wood anemones.

A small coarse fishing lake is also on site (look out here for mallards and moorhens) and there’s a dog-friendly trail for further walks in the woods. Once you’ve exhausted all those options, amble over to the coffee shop for refreshments, then – if the kids have any energy left – over to the adventure play area (it’s suitable for all ages of kids, but parental assistance may be needed for the very young).

Pitching is in three fields: the biggest one with the amenities block (newly extended and renovated in 2019 ); the second with the fishing lake, and the third in a woodland area suitable for tents. All guests have access to the amenities block with separate disabled facilities, as well as free hot water available 24 hours a day, and acovered washing-up area. Wardens are on site at all times.

And when you’re venturing off site? If you’re not sure where to make for first, the well-stocked tourist information point should supply some tips: you could, for example, have days in Hastings, Battle, Rye, more Sussex seaside towns, nearby nature reserves, the High Wealds, Sussex vineyards, Sussex castles…

Please note

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Well kept, quiet site with really friendly staff and good facilities. Our tent (non electric) pitch was a little out of the way of the main site area so nice and quiet (although people were respectful of others anyway so wasn’t any noise issues). There is a lovely woodland area to walk through. The honesty shop was a nice touch and well stocked with snacks and ice cream! Bathrooms were clean. The owners and wardens were very friendly. Will definitely be staying again. Also lots of cute bunnies around!

    Disliked:

Could do with another couple of toilets as had to queue a few times. WiFi and phone signal was bad - but a good opportunity to keep off phones and enjoy nature and your surroundings.

The photos just don’t it justice. What a gem of a place!

Built by Des and his family just a couple of years ago, you can tell this is a family with a passion for camping. Every detail has been thoughtfully executed, from the fresh water tap at our pitch, to fencing ensuring our pitch felt private.

For those not into the ‘full’ camping experience, mixed in with the pitches are spaces for motor homes, permanent small lodges and bell tents. Not to mention the option for tents to have en suite facilities. Having now seen this option, it’s a great way to camp without trudging to toilets in the night, or sharing facilities with other families #covidfriendly. Even so, the communal facilities are new and clean as well.

The site had a lovely community feel, with a small lake, woodland to explore and wild rabbits to keep you entertained. Not to mention the seaside just down the road. On site the owners were available each day, making sure everyone had what they needed; and their kids played with our children on the (much loved) play area too.

There’s everything you could need for your stay, from an honesty shop for small essentials like milk, to breakfast items you could order for the following morning- pastries, bacon etc.

This is not your usual basic camping experience, it’s so much more.

Where do I start! This is the Best campsite I've ever had the pleasure of staying, secluded pitch that was next to beautiful Woodlands, the kids loved the play park that's on site and the honesty shop is well stocked at very good prices. The owners are very friendly as are all the staff that work there.its extremely clean and covid safe with anti bacteria hand gel and spray readily available in all toilets and shower rooms.and if you get the chance to see the albino white squirrel that visits the feeding station by the honesty shop that's an added bonus. If I could rate higher I would.

The site was very pretty with woodland and bluebells. Lots of wildlife to see. The facilities were clean and well looked after. There were limited supplies sold in reception, and the site have an "honesty shop" where you can get coffee and a selection of snacks (mostly ice cream etc). There's also books and dvds/cds that you can borrow.
The owners and other people working around the site were extremely friendly.
You can pre-order local produce - the croissants and pain au chocolate were lovely!

    Disliked:

When we went, the weather was horrible (not the site's fault, though!). The pitches are a bit bumpy - so we ended up with lots of puddles on the pitch.
The "honesty shop" was lovely but I couldn't have any of the tea or coffee as there was nothing decaffeinated.
I think the site is quite a trek away from the nearest shop or pub. I didn't brave the local area because of the weather, so might be misguided.
The wi-fi was a bit hit and miss - again, that might have been the weather.

From the manager...

Thank you for visiting and taking the time to write a review.

We can certainly do something about the Tea and Coffee and will get some stocks in of decaf products on the hope you return. Hopefully the powers that be can help with the weather....

We do have a couple of pubs walkable and details of them and phone numbers are in the coffee shop, sorry if we missed pointing you in the right direction.
